| Neko Case – Hold On, Hold On Lyrics | 10 years ago |

jsaacus comments that the first stanza is about being a vampire, I tend to agree with that especially since musicians waking hours are spent after sundown. Going further, I would venture to guess that her 'own blood' would be fellow musicians. Intra-band or music scene bedfellows could get messy, hence the reference to 'strangers' vis-a-vis, those outside the music biz. 'Compared to some, I've been around.' Reference to the nomadic life of an indie-rocker.... 'But I tried really hard'...Neko wanted a stable, solid relationship but the career she chose forbids that, hence the desire to 'hold on' to a relationship itself became an illusion or as she puts it, a 'lie'. In this interpretation, Echo symbolizes idealism. Realizing the fate of her choices, she gives herself over to self-loathing, which manifests itself outward...(being 'the mean girl') and hollow, empty sex partners, (somebody's in-between girl). The only path these steps lead to would be the devils' door. 'I leave the party at 3am, alone Thank God. With a valium from the Bride.... Attending a wedding reception, Case gets so intoxicated, she makes an emotional scene. It's a cry for help really, the root causes of which are her desperate situation. She doesn't really love the devil, it's just that her life choices leave her with no other dance partners. As an epilogue, I envision Case dying of a broken heart before her golden years. That, or she finds freedom from her self-imposed bondage by trusting in Christ to break the chains that bind her. Lord knows that the Church could use an authentic voice to tell the tale of one who's been to hell and back. |

| Morrison practiced 'consciousness flow' which allowed him to mix and match whatever thoughts coursed through his mind that rhymed, in this song, it just happened to be women and Serial killers like manson. There is no 'hidden' meaning. | |
