Most people assume Jon had a happy childhood, which isn't really true. He doesn't talk about the bad stuff very often, but when he does, it's heartbreaking. Around the time this song came out, he said it was a hard one for him, but he was willing to show some of his "emotional scars" that he never talked about publicly before. Really sad. And then, obviously, it's about surviving, and moving on, and living your life the best you can. |

This song is about the burnout and depression Jon suffered in the late 80s and early 90s. He said his dream had basically become a nightmare. Success wasn't what he thought it would be. The band was fighting. He said he couldn't understand why he didn't like it anymore, but music was the last thing he wanted to be doing. He refers to that period of time as the "grey period," in his life. All he did was sit on the beach and drink, everyday. He was so depressed he nearly jumped out of a moving car. His wife stopped him, saving his life. The song was written in 1991, but they didn't release it until 2004. When they finally released it, Jon said he likes it more now, because it doesn't hurt as bad. |
