This song has a very interesting background. The facts are somewhat confusing so it is best to start at the beginning, 10 years before. Robert was in love with the exotic Shirley Wilson in the mid-1960s but she did not like his rock and roll lifestyle so they had to split up. He later dated, then married, her sister Maureen, whom he had three children with. They divorced amicably in 1983 and are still good friends. Later, he ended up back together with the inspiration of this song, his love Shirley. She gave birth to his last child, Jesse in 1991 but eventually they went separate ways. |

This song is about combat related Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). There are many veterans that tell the same story, forever haunted by the visions of their encounters in war or, as in this case, haunted by the vision of the eyes of the person they shot. The story is clear to all that suffer from this injury, that will always suffer from it. Some people are not affected by such things, others are permantly affected. I know because I will always carry the burden of this truth...in the exact way Sade sings about. |
