Arcade Fire – Windowsill Lyrics 14 years ago
Arcade Fire is so adept at taking abstract feelings, in this case feelings of dismay at the world you have inheirited - a melancholy dismay that feels hopeless, and turning that wrenching feeling in your guts into words and sounds that convey the feeling more than my bumbling attempt. This magic of Arcade Fire is so clear in the whole suburbs album. This is poetry put to great melody.

Broken Bells – The Ghost Inside Lyrics 14 years ago
WFT! Thats the weirdest coincidence ever! I was just argueing with my sister about how she is more materialistic than I. I was just mentioning this song to her. For a second I freaked out and thought you were my sister after that second reply but you arent.

RebekahMertz: I sometimes find songs that totally describe my life or ones that seem as if they are telling me something. Or are you saying my interpretation is a dig at you? If so then we are all partially materialistic its really hard to avoid. If you are indeed the girl society is trying to distort and normalize, then do not give up the ghost inside!

I still think its "dont let the lady finger blow in your hat". Maybe the firecracker isnt literal but instead refers to a small but explosive thing such as an idea in your brain. She has to supress this idea this ghost inside before it shatters her whole life and makes her head (in her hat) figuratively explode.

Broken Bells – The Ghost Inside Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the song is about a girl who knowingly sells her soul to the empty "modern" material world. The ghost inside is her consiance or her soul something that haunts her inside telling her that this magazine world isnt real or fufilling. She gives it up so that she can take the path of least reistance and sell her love to the modern love. She has been battling this angle over her shoulder even after she tries to conform and marry the modern man. But the world keeps telling her to "cover her eyes with the modern" with new things to forget. Even the songs on her car radio try to convince her that "its too late to leave him". This pressuring society (or as mentioned later it could be the singer sarcastically) are the ones singing "give it up for that daughter/ shes a star tonight" congratulating her on giving up the ghost inside.
In the end of the song the singer tries to save her, asking "was it all for show to turn in to all of them?" He hopes she has only conformed on the outside and she is still an individual deep down. He encouages her to join him "turnin a page".
That was really long but this song has so much amazing meaning I wish I could adress every line here.
