Having gone through a similar story with what sounds like to be about a sister who is struggling with body image/self esteem problems and possibly and eating disorder, which all is impacting her brother and her mother. This is my interpretation of the lyrics: "There's a chip on your shoulder, girl And by God it'll make you fall If you let it take a part of your soul" (He's basically saying, that he doesn't want her eating disorder/depression to take get the best of her because it WILL take over her life.) "I see the love in your brother's eyes And the love in your mother's cries Sister don't test the ones you love" (Her brother and her mother both love her, but she finds it hard to believe because she can't love herself, so she continues on with her life feeling unloved by anybody and her family doesn't know what more they can do to show her that she is in fact loved.) "Sister don't let go Sister don't let go of us" [x2] (Don't give up, and don't lose all hope.) "Cause your roots will rot away And your fruit, it wont grow Your bark will wear thin, body hollow" (If she continues to let the eating disorder take over her life, her life will keep going down hill, this part is actually pretty self explanatory; The effects of her eating disorder will start to show over time such as, her life will only be unhealthy, she is restricting herself from developing into a healthy minded and healthy body. She not only will look thin, but she will feel empty emotionally.) "Don't test the ones you love It'll only tear us down If you want to feel alive Then learn to love your ground" [x2] (This is telling her that, the more she hurts herself, she's hurting her family as well because at this point they can't do anything about her choice of unhappiness. If she wants to live a happy life and feel loved by others, then she needs to love herself first.) |
