Zoot Woman – Grey Day Lyrics 14 years ago
When I hear this song, I think it is about accepting a half-love instead of dropping someone to pursue the real thing. The person is willing to fool himself for a mediocre outcome to stave off a bad heartbreak -- "put your smile on my face stop me wasting away". But every day is just the same old same old ("change the tune, sounds the same").

The Green Light to a Grey Day means he is giving his assent to a so-so outcome.

I'm not sure how love is a race, but maybe it is something competitive or something like he's rushing forward but is going to lose. The Green Light can be the signal to start?

Great song, not fully interpretable, but has lots of feeling of self-defeat in it.

Yes – Wonderous Stories Lyrics 14 years ago
I got into Yes at the same time I was reading a lot of Robert Heinlein. The two are forever meshed in my mind. So, I interpret this to be describing the amazing work of Heinlein, whose stories did see into the future and raise the spirits of many hearts. Plus "Starship Troopers" was the name of one of Heinlein's books and was made into a movie.

Also "Astounding Stories" was the name of a sci-fi magazine that Heinlein was published in frequently. I know that this personal Heinlein interpretation is probably something that very few people would share, but hey, maybe one of you feels it too.

Yes – Going for the One Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree with downriver's interpretation. The tempo and choppiness of the rhythm mimic the relentless noise inside the head and the flurry of rushing from one thing to the next in modern life, all while Going for the One - the spiritual oneness, the goal. The key line to me is "I think I'll take a look out of the window. When I think about you I don't feel low". It is like by giving up the pursuit, taking a time out, he has the space to make progress. The pace of the song changes there too. And it goes into more lofty thoughts, and ends with radiating love. It's like the 2nd part of the song is an ascention.

As for the 'here you stand no taller than the grass is' - it can mean he's fallen down, and laying the grass - again, another tempo change and another moment where he is still.

This song makes me high by reminding me to think about the oneness and Cosmic Consciousness.

Washed Out – Amor Fati Lyrics 14 years ago
I hear in this song that one person is comforting another who is grieving. "We left, so tired" makes me think they have left a wake or funeral. "Even though he's hard to forgive" might be about trying to forgive a parent who has passed on - even when it is no longer possible. The beginning part that commands "Don't drift too far" makes me think s/he is suggesting not to get too deeply enrapt in grief, but to "let go" and reach out to others instead of being consumed with guilt or grief. That "it's not your fault" lyric could mean lot of things, maybe relating to the part about forgiving later, or maybe its own thing about something else. Self-blame certainly can be connected to grief.

The person is suggesting to the other to follow their instinct (the guiding light, the faith) and that the world still has 'gold' for them ahead, if they can move past this point ("alright in time").

Beautiful song, whatever interpretation. Full of hope and putting the past behind you to follow your inner light.
