to me this song is about a great love which didn't last. it was true and all-consuming, so powerful that it's a marvel to the narrator that 'the history books forgot about us, the bible didn't mention us, not even once.' they were absolutely real and vulnerable with one another, he lets her cut his hair (source of strength, going along with the samson and delilah metaphor). but it didn't work out, 'oh, we couldn't bring the columns down, we couldn't destroy a single one.' they couldn't conquer the obstacles in their relationship. now she's looking on at his life and he's with someone else, but she knows 'i loved you first' and perhaps best, in the realest way. sometimes passion is too powerful and it can be destructive for the people in love. thus, 'you are my sweetest downfall.' a love that was sweet, but in the end, not beneficial to the narrator, or capable of lasting. |

| to me this song is about giving up on a relationship with a person that is lost and depressed and dragging you down with them. she's watching him galavant with other women, 'you've got them all fooled,' but she realizes she's not going to be fooled again. he's a sweet talker, but she's gotten wise. still, she's aware of the strong pull he has on her heart. | |
