This song is about the Moors Murders which Myra Hindley and her boyfriend were convicted for. i believe that all that yelling for his "mother" is meant to be representative of what the victims would be yelling as they were being killed or raped. Myra Hindley is the "anti-mother" because she killed children which is the opposite of what a "mother" does, gives birth. "she's the anti-mother, mother, mother is that you?" this line tells that although the murders were an atrocity, christians wish the worst for her "let her rot, let her starve, you'd see her dead" an eye from an eye response to express/channel their hate which is guised under their christian identity. "then you goodly christian people,with your sickly mask of love, would tear that woman limb from limb, you'd never get enough" "she's the anti-mother, mother,mother is that you" so they're alike in that way that they could be compared. |

the song title "White Punks On Hope" is in reference to The Tube's song White Punks On Dope but only to deviate from and ridicule it. this song is about punk's divisions: political (left wing/ right wing), racial (black/ white), and class (working class/ middle class, upper class) it strips the deception of The Clash's superficial punk integrity exposing their exploitation of punks essence as a path for profit. "punk credentials" "if you care to take a look at the way things really stand, you'll see we're all just niggers to rulers of this land" this pretty much says that the government leaders treat everyone like shit but they have the punks distracted with the divisions and the violence that occurs because of them, while the root of these problems is the deprivation of anarchy and freedom. the person in this song has an invincible/immortal soul in purgatory, hence the name Totalimmortal. "i pass right through the namesless ones" is a purgatory example. also: -> "i know that hope's unknown" he knows that what will be of him, his judgement, is pending. "sometimes the water feels so real. as i walk through it fills my lungs" their perception of reality and imagination is distorted because of this newly acquired immunity against biological death, yet not protected against pain. what i first interpreted from this song was that it was about Lucifer, the FALLEN angel they describe a powerful GLOW from emitting from him. "someone took it [glow] from him" him being cast down from heaven and stripped of his angelic/ innocent/ holy status. "remember when we were all so beautiful.": Lucifer was one of the most beautiful angels, but because of his rebellion against God's law he was punished by having his beauty taken from him. "they were claiming regret as their own dissipated" : their (mankinds) discomfort (hatred/envy) with his (Lucifer's) glow* was a cover up for their guilt of conforming and obeying while they couldn't do it for themselves. *GLOW which could be represent his knowledge and independence ways, though rebellious and disobedient. as "dissipated" meaning his fading will or death |
