The Mountain Goats – Teenage World Lyrics 10 years ago
Now this could just as easily be a song about John getting a rabbit, but personally I took it to be a reference to a white rabbit; a motif that permeates drug-abuse related music. In an interview John gave to Marc Maron, he says that he believes that his girlfriend that he dated during his heroin and speed days was "stepping on his dose" or limiting his dose. He didn't go into detail, but if he was suspicious of her stepping on his dose, this could have led to fights perhaps. Anyway, the idea of a rabbit as a gift leads to the issues of trying to figure out what it means and him not dealing or interacting with the rabbit in any way and opting for a different drug. If the rabbit is viewed as a drug (say, a metaphor for heroin) the same issues would arise. Why would she send me drugs if she is stepping on my dose? She doesn't want me getting high one minute and she gives me drugs the next and this is all so confusing. I thought it would be genius if he meant the rabbit as a metaphor for drugs because both an actual rabbit as a gift and drugs as a gift will raise the same questions and issues for John, and the use of dexadrine only reaffirms the drug relevance of the song. But again, this could just as easily be a song about John receiving a rabbit. Love the song.

@[nebulousapathy:788] to shawn 10000, have you ever heard a doctor call a time of death to the hundredth of a second? No. That Pythagorean idea seems to be really well researched and does relate to the band's interests. Makes more sense. This isn't to say however 3:14 (3.14) didn't claim the time of death as well, giving that particular lyric an intended double meaning.

@[Daoist:787] And also, the context of them being photographers... Do not spray into eyes... They look literally through a lens at some of the most horrific and dangerous scenes mankind has produced and they do it bravely, and often out of love for each other. You really nailed this on the head, truly a beautiful song.

Volcano Choir – Byegone Lyrics 11 years ago
I just want both of you to know that Volcano Choir is not based around Justin. Volcano Choir is a group he wanted to join, this did not make the group suddenly his.

Volcano Choir – Comrade Lyrics 11 years ago
"Justin" isn't saying any of these things. Justin is just the singer. These aren't Justin's lyrics. Not upset, just clerical. Give credit where credit is due.

Believe it or not, YOU'RE wrong. In the context of the song, it makes no sense for that word to be "races".

Radical Face – Wrapped in Piano Strings Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song is everything that zinna123 suggested except that it was a boyfriend and a girlfriend signed a suicide pact (after he pulled the trigger he said "we're in the air") and only the boyfriend died and the girl was saved by doctors that opened her closed eyes (they cut your eyes wide open) and kept her alive. He couldn't do anything to help her cross over because the dead couldn't kill the living. He was figuratively wrapped in piano strings.

Typhoon – The Sickness Unto Death Lyrics 13 years ago
In response to somemexican, this song is kind of, in a way, fighting with depression. He, as a child, had lyme disease and nearly died. He lived, thanks to modern medicine, but feels his time is borrowed. So most of the songs on this album are about how we closely toe the line between life and death. In this song in particular, he explores the idea of someone who wastes their entire life doing nothing, and then they realize that their life is wasted (old man in a rocking chair, you wake up, you've been living alone). The shards of mirrors are referring to never knowing who you are. Going through your entire life without looking at yourself and trying to understand what you live for.
Along with this whole song being about the process of dying in general, it turns more personal at the end when he talks about burning his childhood memories. Kyle felt he never had a childhood because he spent that time in sickness.
And then the ending refrain, "Eternity will smile on me". This pays homeage to the idea that when you die, you will exist in an eternal happiness, regardless of the pain you suffered through when you lived.
A moving, beautiful song. I have to give credit to Kyle Morton for being able to write incredibly personal and tender songs that can relate to most anyone who hears them.

Have you listened to "You Know You're Right"? It may be a bit sadder. It's a suicide note.

Modest Mouse – Whenever I Breathe Out, You Breathe In (Positive/Negative) Lyrics 13 years ago
A real talent that modest mouse has often lies in Isaac's guitar playing, you know, on top of his incredible lyricism. He creates a dreamscape-ish, surreal sound with distortion and harmonics that emphasizes the numbness of his feelings in the song. It's just that little extra push over the edge that makes this songs rather indelible to those who've experienced a similar feeling as this song suggests.

Typhoon – CPR/Claws Pt. 2 Lyrics 13 years ago
Kyle, as a young kid, nearly died of Lyme disease. He lived thanks to modern medicine and a kidney from his father. This is something I feel is necessary to know in order to understand the meaning behind a lot of his lyrics.
Much of the lyrics in this song could be taken by themselves in relation to Kyle's close call with death. "I wanna live but I don't wanna live" could very well be his feelings he had when he was deathly ill. "since you have nothing to do with your hands, you might as well pray" shows the disparity he had when facing death.
The first verse is what particularly gets me, it covers (as do much of Typhoon songs) the almost cathartic experience of suffering. "We'll suffer for as long as we can take, and then the suffering one way or the other, it will go away". Suffering will last as long as you live, but whether you're able to defeat suffering while alive or it's forced to go away when you die, it will go away. That's a very comforting thought.
This song holds a lot of meaning for me, and is my favorite Typhoon song.

Modest Mouse – Baby Blue Sedan Lyrics 13 years ago
I like the comment on how it's just a simple dance and the awkwardness of it all, but I connected to this song in a different way. In the past few years of my life I've realized how hard it is to understand people. I had a girlfriend that when she was away, I would miss her. I had an idealized image of who she was. But when she was around, she was someone else. I felt lonesome when she was around.

Neutral Milk Hotel – April 8th Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is definitely about Kurt Cobain's tragic death on April 8th 1994. How Mangum refers to "your widow" refers to Courtney Love, and he again refers to himself as his widow, as he, along with the rest of the world, felt the pain of his passing. "Show me all your figure paintings" refers to Kurt's prolific paintings and art work. It's truly a painful and delicately beautiful song. R.I.P. Kurt Cobain.
