My favorite part of the song is "So I waited by the phone…".
In my interpretation he knows he's about to die and is in the last few seconds of his life, and so he's either waiting for the phone (i.e., the "call" up to heaven) or the BANG (i.e., damnation to hell). He knows the phone is never going to ring, he hasn't been that kind of person, but he still tries to fool himself by singing and pretending not to hear the upcoming bang. But eventually he realizes that "the bang never came and I never got the call", so "Fuck it, I must still be alive! Thank you! I love you all!" He's been given a second chance, and though some say he's "doomed to repeat" he knows that's not him and he'll do it better the second time. |

At the end of the first verse, it should be "SLR 10-4", with 10-4 being radio code for "transmission received/OK" |
