The Books – Smells Like Content Lyrics 14 years ago
The song is just about human existence. How it really is. Seen through eyes that have been washed of the layers of mud (sweeping generalizations, religious nonsense, and biasing cultural attitudes etc...) that aging in an unenlightened environment has caked on over time.

It is easy to get caught up in heady explanations using Chomsky, Camus, nihilism, existentialism etc... and though I am sure there are similarities in the concepts used I think they were concluded independently of each other. This whole song sounds like the internal ramblings of someone analyzing life on LSD. The first verse speaks about seeing things finally how they are despite how we have grown to conceptualize them. The second verse is existentialism, but existentialist ideas nearly always seep into the mind of someone analyzing reality, and life. The lyric the statues bleeding green cold be referring to the mossy stuff that can be found on old statues indicating that as time goes on humanity has been better able to say things more precisely (Though since the knowledge has always been inside they just express the idea better. The silence becoming more verbose indicates the realizing of truths about reality, about how people are just better with words not with wisdom, and the silencing of words which muddy truth actually allows the mind to understand much more deeply the workings of existence. The next two verses are why I think it is LSD, because the absurd perceptional changes which illicit feelings by comparisons and combinations the street corners gnashing teeth...engineer... the mind seeing how anxiety invoking the unnatural creations that surround us can be. The opening the box is like a game. LSD is the opening. Realizing that life is like a game and while hallucinating there are no actual rules and one must explore and figure out this new perception they've acquirement. Capitulating with fate is something many trippers experience when they are forced to understand their experience is happening and may at times be out of their hands as to how it unfolds. The mind being like the sun is talking about the overwhelming abundance of clarity and insight one is bombarded with during the experience which can easily be experienced as having a mind infinite in power and glowing brightly like the sun. The wisdom that has never died is the unlocking of the internal wisdom that has always been in people but is buried beneath the nonsense we are constantly being taught. LSD resets the minds perceptions allowing one to see things more accurately. then finally the expectation leads to appointment- when people take such substances they often do so expecting it to be some fantastic cartoon experience and are let down because the experience of tripping is vastly different from what mainstream culture would have you believe.
