| Some very interesting takes on this song. I had never considered it about the loss of innocence and youth like he was talking to his former self. Some lines don't mesh with that idea like "I don't see your mother" and not wanting to remind her of something. That's why I think it's about a deceased childhood friend. One thing that I see no one else picked up on is the line "I have laughter for these years." I have always heard this as "I have loved her for these years" especially since it comes right after mentioning Annie and her marriage. She was a lover of the speaker, the friend, or perhaps both. This was always the climax of the song for me and really summarized how much his life has fallen apart since his friend died. It really gives more of a punch than the given line and I'm not quite sure why he would be laughing at all. | |
