It sounds like a nice and unhealthy relationship where he is probably a gangster boss with loads of money and she is a pretty young thing that is emotionally unstable - she's the only one who will put up with who he really is (a hard criminal) because she realizes nobody else would put up with her antics. The "my old man" part obviously refers to the fact that the man is older than the girl, but I'm still a bit uncomfortable with that to be honest, as "my old man" is not a common reference for a partner of ANY age, it's used as an exclusive reference to a father... so it sounded incestuous to me at first. Then I realized it must also be daddy issues (beside excessive drinking, dramatic/extreme behaviors and also borderline criminal). |

| fun. – We Are Young Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| I have to admit this song really annoys me - not just the lyrics but also the very cliche 80s replica chorus. That said, to me it just sounds like a guy trying to romanticize his unhealthy relationship... he somehow gave his girlfriend a scar (he's taking full credit for it so I am presuming it really was fully his fault and/or doing) and he's trying to convince her that drinking and partying and crawling home and having "fun" in that way is romantic ("tonight we are young"). That whole "live for today" and "carpe diem" thing that only *really* works for drunks and unstable people - it's a beautiful ideal for many people, but the ones who live like that are usually the ones who drink and party their lives away. He sounds to me like a self-absorbed guy who will own his mistakes but is unwilling to pay for them tonight and probably tomorrow, too. | |

Pretty sure this song is supposed to be confusing. You'll never know for sure if it's about war or sex and that is supposed to symbolize the way we accept war nowadays. It's okay to simulate it in games like it's "entertaining". Countries feel "empowered" when they go to war. People think it's a game. It's not on their home soil so it's not their problem how severe it truly is. And that confusion is what I see in this song. People don't even know what war is anymore, they think it's a movie, there is no point in making a genuine song about it because people are too arrogant to realize the devastation of people losing their relatives and hometowns. In my opinion she is trying to say "you think it's sexy, you think it's entertaining, I know how you'll feel once you have a gun to your head" sort of thing. Could just be me. |

| M.I.A. – Bad Girls Lyrics | 13 years ago |

I love this song exactly for the meaning I read from it. There is the parallel with Saudi women not allowed to drive cars (outside the city?) - which means they can never get (far) away (fast) if they are in trouble or being abused. This song rebels to that idea. The lyrics word for word don't necessarily make sense to be honest, it's the overall idea they create that makes sense. "Live fast, die young, bad girls do it well" - it literally implies that women who live the way they want (freely) still in many parts of the world still suffer harsh consequences for it. Whether it be because of their "own fault" because they weren't properly educated (on disease even) or because as soon as they act out of normal ("bad") men hold them accountable violently. The video is double symbolic to me because the girls are racing ahead while a traditionally clothed man is ("still") riding a horse. Maybe it's supposed to imply that these traditional men try to suppress because these women are the future and they know it. They speed forward but the men can't keep up. I love it most that she redefines "bad girls". Usually in pop culture "bad girls" are "slutty". She is implying "bad girls" are simply strong and act freely and men sometimes can't keep up with them. Disobedient, non-traditional, intelligent, defiant women. It has meaning everywhere in a way, not just in countries where women are physically suppressed. Even in western countries where we believe women to be "free", they easily become "outcast" for defying certain expectations of what a woman should be. |

I'm kind of saddened by all these dark/negative interpretations... I was feeling a melancholic happiness, but not emotional abuse. The song is kind of ruined for me now... I was feeling a melancholy towards a simple happiness. When putting on his favorite dress made her feel like a million dollars, and happiness was in the little things; hanging out together, having fun with friends. When at the end of the day, happiness was simple, and now she has bigger worries. I could relate to it because me and my boyfriend have a lot of financial struggle at the moment, but still happiness seems such a strong and simple thing when we play video games together or have drinks with our wonderful friends and family. That dispite the sorrows we carry, maling ourselves and each other happy together with little things is still possible. We can't buy new clothes but when I put on that dress we both love I still feel like the richest woman on earth. I guess people hear what they can relate to. No doubt I would have heard more sadness in it two years ago when I was still involved with an emotionally abusive guy. It's all about where your own mind is at, too. I just hear "heaven is a place on earth with you" above all other insinuations. |
