Fiction Plane – Death Machine Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm finding this band to be surprisingly good. I automatically attribute it to Joe Sumner being Sting's son. His father's influence is just so prominent in his voice AND the music.

Second song I've heard (after Two Sisters), and I like this one two. Sounds good, good message--good stuff.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Californication Lyrics 14 years ago
I just watched californication on youtube, brought back a lot of memories. that was practically my coming of age album, and I can't believe that time has come and gone so fast. I just wanted to come on here and write that the chili peppers did a great thing with this album. I've always liked them, but I never loved them. I think keidis really outdid himself here. I was surprised to see how good the lyrics were. good job chili peppers. you made a fuckin classic

The Jam – Absolute Beginners Lyrics 14 years ago
sivilla I can't believe u think this song sucks! I never used to be big on the jam; i.e. I only really listened to That's Entertainment and Street Called Malice. I listened to this one last night and loved it. It's so rich and explosive. Maybe slightly over the top but with enough raw energy to back it up. Lol I thought the chorus was about heroin. I think that about lots of songs now since I'm a recovering addict.

Sublime – Burritos Lyrics 14 years ago
I happened to come here cause I've been thinking about this song; I haven't even listened to it for a while. I just wanted to say that anyone who's had a dope prob will get this song more than anybody. In fact, I think you have to have been a user to really recognize it.

A few people have also mentioned it. Reefers, who just posted, said exactly what I think, and it's somewhat of a coincidence. Here I am, about 9 months sober, a musician, and every night I think about how I lack the motivation to pick up the guitar and be inspired to write something. That's what led me to think about the song.

Anyway, imo this song describes EXACTLY what it's like to be a heroin addict, and experiencing one of those countless and inevitable days where your habit has confined you to your bed, unwilling and unable to do anything save get high. Brad wrote this in a way that it could be interpreted as something else, like any good songwriter does, but if you have any knowledge of what heroine does to people then you'll know it's a mistake to ignore this. Addiction dominates your life, and if he wrote this after he got addicted, it's a safe bet that he was thinking about it all the time, and experiencing severe depression and probably lack of motivation. The pain alone will keep you in bed. Once you've been an addict, things lose their luster.

I got into Sublime when I was like 12 so I never thought about this back then. Sublime has always been one of my favorite bands, and I always associated their songs with chilling out and having a good time. I think as I got older though and listened to the lyrics more, I realize there's a kind of tragic feeling in even the happy songs. When I think about it, pretty much all the songs have a bittersweet emotion, even if they sound upbeat. It's just the sound he loved and the feeling he was going for, though his life was in disarray.

I think if everyone really wants to get to the deeper meaning behind this song (and there most probably is one), they have to take Brad's life into account. We know from all his songs that he wrote about his experiences or things that inspired him. He also wrote a lot about his habit. It's probably what caused him to feel this way, but that doesn't mean it isn't a universal emotion we all feel. That's why everyone can relate to it.

Bob Dylan – Ballad of a Thin Man Lyrics 14 years ago
By the way, I think a lot of people refuse to believe the gay theme cause it makes them uncomfortable. It's fine to believe what you want about songs, that's part of music; we interpret it the way we like so that it speaks to us. But don't come onto a song meanings website and try to claim you know Dylan's intent and what it's REALLY about if you refuse to face the obvious.

Bob Dylan – Ballad of a Thin Man Lyrics 14 years ago
I have always thought this song was about a gay sex meeting. I was surprised to see so many people don't think so. Most of it seems to suggest a guy showing up somewhere where there's a naked guy and sex-like activities ensue. Two of the verses are very graphic as people have already mentioned. I hadn't listened to this song more than a handful of times in my life, and I never thought about the "rich guy encountering bohemians who disrespect him", but it makes sense. In fact the more confusing lines could be about that.

Now in my opinion the song is very obviously a gay encounter. Dylan (who's not a moron I assume) wrote it that way and if he didn't he at least have to be aware that this is what it suggests. Now since I don't believe Dylan wrote a song that coincidentally ended up looking like a gay encounter, it's very safe to assume he did write it that way. The more suitable question, I think, is to consider whether he intended for it to have a second meaning, notably the one about the rich guy, or at least something along those lines. Knowing Dylan, and giving him the benefit of the doubt I'd say he was clever enough to try and give it a second meaning. We all know that's not beyond him.

Now in regards to the gay theory being unlikely because the encounter is promiscuous and not a bonafide loving relationship; it's a mistake to project a faux politically correct sensibility onto Dylan or his song. Gay people are just regular people and not superior moral beings who don't engage in debauchery. So this instance is not a moral lesson or anything; it's a scenario, and one that has most definitely happened at some point. Furthermore gays have been oppressed and driven into hiding for a long time, and for a long time they had to meet in secret, in secret places, just to satisfy their taboo urges. Sometimes with complete strangers. In fact I'm sure it still happens in some places.
