The Replacements – Here Comes A Regular Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm thinking about the line "I used to live at home, now I stay at the house". Could it be that he actually tried to get away from his old life, moving from the parental home to a bigger city or something, but can't pay the rent and he has to move back. If someone asks him about it he'll tell them that it's just temporary, that he's just visiting... but well, the summers gone and the winter is on its way, and he's still stuck in the old town he grew up in, a regular at the same old bar. It just doesn't feel like home anymore.

Paul Westerberg – Love You In The Fall Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm thinking about my own seasonal depression, hearing this song. If I can love someone in the fall (when I'm feeling worse) then I could probably love the person forever. In that way it appeals to me, even though the lyrics is a bit cheesy.

And also the "You're like a picture on the fridge that's never stocked with food" could be him referring to himself. No one even bother looking at the fridge if they know it's empty. Or maybe he just means that the loudmouths sure talks a lot, but it's all nonsense.

I like the fact that you can choose to interpret it as "Can't take it back". Sneaky. :)

The Replacements – Can't Hardly Wait (Tim demo version) Lyrics 14 years ago
Oh, silly me. Just realized I was listening to the alternate version from Tim, when this is the demo version lyrics. So, I take back the whole "error in lyrics"-thingie.

Paul Westerberg – It's a Wonderful Lie Lyrics 14 years ago
In this song he really shows how brilliant he is with words! You could take just a random line from the whole song, and it'll still sound like the smartest quote ever written.

To me this is a song about being depressed. About the heavy days and the glasses you put on, through which you see nothing but how things are or could go wrong - "And I look for rain".
It could also be a late insight that he hasn't been good to someone. I'm thinking about an old love he had and lost, due to his manners. They were young. He was handsome, strong and on top of the world... and then suddenly he would break down and couldn't understand why. She couldn't keep up with him. Wanted to understand him, but since he didn't let her in, she thought that the relationship stayed on a level, that was to shallow. She was hurt and she left him. He shook his head, said
"Don't pin your hopes, or pin your dreams, to misanthropes or guys like me" and moved on, ignoring the marks she left on him.
Now, several years past his prime, she still crosses his mind now and then. Sometimes he'd like to call her up and explain one or two things. He always talks himself out of it. The truth is overrated and he still get by with those white lies he fills himself with.
He's becoming to insightful to deny things, he knows that, but he still tries.

The Replacements – Can't Hardly Wait (Tim demo version) Lyrics 14 years ago
The first versions of the song are definitely better than the final product, in my opinion. Not only for the great lyrics, but how they performed it.
There's something raw and desperate in both Paul's voice and Stinson's guitar strumming (both in the electric and the acoustic versions) that make it seem so genuine.

As a sixteen-year-old I could lie on my bedroom floor listening to this song on repeat for hours. It gave me some sort of comfort. Which is strange, though I've always known it had to be about a suicide.

Although I believe that the lyrics has some errors, due to the several different versions. This is like a mix from both the alternate version and the outtakes from the expanded Tim album.

The acoustic outtake version of Can't Hardly Wait goes something like this:

"I'll be there in an hour
Take these two weeks there on foot
Watering hole, scummy* water tower
I'd climb to the top scream out loud if I could

I'll be sad in heaven
You won't visit** me there

Jesus rides beside me
He never buys any smokes
Hurry up, hurry up I've had enough of the stuff
Ashtray floors, dirty clothes, filthy jokes

Light flash in the evening
guess we'll follow him there

I'll be there in an hour
If there's a whole in the gate
Climb to the top of this scummy* water tower screaming
I can't hardly wait

I can't wait, I can't wait...."

*Should be correct if you compare it to the more common version of the song, but in the acoustic outtake it sounds like he's singing "cummy" och maybe "crummy"

** In other versions he uses "find" and "follow".

The electric outtake is a bit different goes something like this, I think:

"I'll be there in an hour
Take half a month there on foot
Watering hole, scummy* water tower
Find it to the top I'll avoid if I could

I'll be sad in heaven
You won't find me there

Jesus rides beside me
He never buys any smokes
Hurry up, hurry up I've had enough of the stuff
Dirty floors, sleazy clothes, filthy jokes

I'll be there in the evening
I guess I'll follow him there

I'll be there in an hour
I'll find a whole in the gate
Climb to the top of this scummy* water tower and
I can't hardly wait

I can't wait, I can't wait...."

The alternate version from Please to meet me, sounds to me like something like this:

"I can't wait for hours
Take half a month home on foot
Watering hole, fucking water tower
Scream on top I'll avoid if I could

Lights gonna flash in the evening
You won't find me there

Jesus rides beside me
He never buys any smokes
Hurry up, hurry up I've had enough of the stuff
Ashtray floors, dirty clothes, filthy jokes

We'll get there in the evening
I can't hardly wait

Lights gonna flash tomorrow
There's a whole in the gate
I'll be riding* on this little tower
I can't hardly awake**

I can't wait, I can't wait...."

*Or "rioting" or something? Hmm... could make sense. In some strange "I protest by taking my own life"-way

** Might be "I can't hardly wait", but it sounds a bit like a K!
