In my opinion, this song is about either a grandparent, or a parent taking care of there kids/grandkids on a ranch. They arent the best kids, but the parents dont give up hope in them. Then the parent or grandparent passes away, and the children celebrate their life, burry them in the place they loved. This song seems very deep and personal, probably about a part in Sams childhood |

To me, this song represents the loss of hope. The boys coin is his hope, his security. the coin is the only thing he has left. "When god left the ground to circle the world" meaning God left him, he is alone with no one to help or reasure him. God is his faith, his hope but he left him alone. The bird represents love to the girl, but the bird seems hurt so she wants to help. The bird flying uo her gown means rape. The bird (love) tricked her and ended up hurting her when she was tying to help. "If god made her eyes for crying at birth" means the girl feels like God brought this upon her, so she has lost all hope. The boy tossing the coin in the sea means his dreams are lost, he has given up. the town all of us burnt means we brought this horror upon us. Over all, it means we have given up faith in God, all hope. We brought pain and suffering upon us, (town burning, bullets, trade magazines) and god has given up his faith in us, and left leaving those with hope still behind. This is my opinion, may not be totally rite |
