The Script – Science & Faith Lyrics 12 years ago
You look down a telescope the same way you look down the barrel of a gun; it doesn't matter whether it's pointing down or not, that phrasing is used anyway. You're being semantic and you're doing it wrong.
However, I agree with most of your second paragraph. I choose to interpret "you can't explain" as meaning that that specific person cannot explain it at that moment but still feels it, not that no one could ever explain it, which makes it make more sense and makes it more enjoyable, whether or not that's how the writers' intended it.

This comment was perfect. I made an account on this site a year or so ago and hadn't logged in since then, just used it as a guest, and had even forgotten my username and password but when I read your comment I decided I had to log in. "it is actually possible to break love down to chemicals, but why does that make it any less special?" That's brilliant, exactly what I think. Many of the comments are saying that people shouldn't try to or cannot "explain away" love, but I think that phrasing shows their misconceptions; scientists and rational thinkers (for the most part) don't want to "explain it away"; they merely want to explain it. Explaining it doesn't reduce it's potency, power, or beauty. One can explain how an electric guitar works and the music theory behind chords and scales and things, and that doesn't make listening to a damn good song that features that instrument any less enjoyable or fulfilling an experience. Just because something's logical rather than mystical does not mean it's not beautiful. If something can be explained, it is still real; all the more real for it, in fact.
As the song is somewhat ambiguous, I chose to imagine the writers' intentions a certain way and interpret the song a certain way, despite the fact that it is unlikely it was how it was actually meant to be interpreted, because that allows me to enjoy the song more. For example, in the lines "You can break everything down to chemical/But you can't explain a love like ours" I choose to interpret "you can't explain" as meaning that specific person she's talking to can't presently explain it but still feels it, not that it is impossible to be explained and that if it was it would somehow not be real.

Obviously I'm 9 years late, but I'd just like to say how so often the first post on these sorts of sites is 'i can't believe no one's posted before' and nothing else. There's not really much point posting if you're just gonna comment that no one's posted.

'crazy groupie' is a serious exaggeration considering is she said was how she liked the song and could relate to it. Also, she wasn't saying she knew exactly how she felt, not even saying she knew how he felt, just that she could relate to the lyrics. Songs can mean different things to different people so even if girls couldn't relate to a breakup song written by a guy (which I disagree with by the way) she could find a different meaning in it she relates to.

I'm so happy is a very common thing to say, and the idea that it's from 'Lithium' is ridiculous, unless you actually have something to back it up like an interview. If not, saying that three common words arranged in a common sentence couldn't have been thought up wihtout an inspiration is, like Beavis says, retarded. Also, Irealise I was 9 years late on the some back but I was 6 when you posted so; oh well, whatever, nevermind ;)

I think the main line everyone seems to have missed out on, and my favourite in this song, is 'never get so close as when the sunward flight begins'. For a while, due to the video, I interpreted 'the sunward flight' as smashing through the windscreen of a car and flying forwards. But later I worked out that it probably actually ties in with the drug addict interpretations, and that 'the sunward flight' refers to getting high (flying towards the sun). This would make the line mean that these two codependent drug addicts are never as in love as when they get another hit of wahtever they're taking. Brilliant song.

Also, I realise that that is 7 years too late, but when you posted that I was 8 so couldn't do much about it back then :)

That's a little extreme.

First off, people assume it's about a car crash primarily due to the msuic video, which centres around the aftermath of a crash. This is supported by a few lines like 'never get so close to death, makes you so alive', 'your hair and dress in ribbons' and 'the sunward flight begins' (which could refer to smashing through the windscreen and flying forwards.
However, I think that this is more liekly to all be a metaphor for drug use, as more lines seem to refer to that. There are the obvious ones, but then the ones that I said might apply to a car crash could also be about drugs. One line in particular that I love in this song is 'never get so close as when the sunward flight begins' because I think that this is actually referring to getting high, therefore the sunward flight, and how it brings these two codependent junkies together.
