someone who has to resort to name calling shouldn't be giving opinions on musical interpretation... Music is an art form... It is a play on words and musical notes... It is very complex... If you have to resort to name calling then you obviously lack the complexity to understand it as shown in your lack of ability to communicate effectively, and tactfully with others... Use your words sir... They get much further with people than calling them shallow names that really mean nothing when you dissect them... Use intelligence and wit to get points across instead ;-)... it shows more class and ability to communicate.... I realize I have no place to tell you what to do.. .But your comment seemed very immature and child like.. .It kind of defeats your obvious intention of making the person you were speaking to feel bad about their previous comment... because now you just look unintelligent and unable to communicate... Try telling them what you didn't like about what they said and do so in a way that dissects their statement and shows them how it was inccorect to say... Hope this was somewhat helpful... if not... I was just offering my assistance here.... no ill intentions |

I have to agree with you hear... The beauty of music (as well as any form of art) is the symbolism involved.... nothing in art is only surface deep... it wouldn't be very artistic if it was... The beauty of music is that there are levels of interpretation you can take from it.... it is so beautiful to dissect.... you have the music itself and the lyrics and then how they play off of each other... It's what makes music so emotional and wonderful... But you are correct... to view a song as just what is says is like saying the person who wrote it is so shallow that they have no depth to their artistic skills of music and lyric writing... music is written because the artist is trying to describe something that is too difficult to describe with mere words... It has to be described with art... so to say the song means exactly what is says takes away from that... It gets frustrasting to me because most people don't have the depth or care to actually dissect the music they are listening to in order to figure out what the artist is trying to convey. |

I don't think he was actually referring to the city of DC as where he was visting a friend.... I think DC represents the changes taking place in the person or group he is observing along side himself in the song... DC is the capital of our nation and therefor representative of a whole lot of change in our government and society... He is talking about a very superficial change taking place... DC is an epicenter for this kind of change in our nation that leaves people feeling alienated from their own country sometimes... Just as he is feeling alienated from something he obviously used to be close to... I don't think he was actually referring to visting a friend in this city.... Think symbolism. |

I have to agree and Disagree with U.S. Postal Service here on hir or her comment.... The timing of the music is very important in how the lyrics progess throughout the song... Even though at the same time the lyrics repeat... Ben Gibbard is observing not only himself in this song but either someone else or a group of people... That is something only Ben will know unless he chooses to reveal what or who he was talking about in this song... The point is that he is observing this other entity other than himself that has changed and caused him to feel alienated from it.... He slowly begins to realize through the song that he has no reason to feel guilty for being separated and out of place around this entity that he is observing along side himself... The music picks up as he gains the confidence to realize this and feel ok with it... He repeats himself as the music picks up as well as his own self reassurance .... He sees that the change that has separated him from this entity is obviously shallow as observed in the first verse where he is being spoken to and he isn't paying attention. Instead he is wondering what is buried beneath " the asphalt" (figurative for below the surface of this changing entity)... He realzies he is a stranger here now and he was the one worth leaving.... But he was the one worth leaving because he realizes he is much deeper than what is going on around him, and he realizes he is ok with that by the end of the song.... " I am finally seeing hwhy I was the one worth leaving"... think about that phrase and the double meaning behind it that goes along with the progressing doubling beat... At the beginning of the song he feels ashamed for being left behind ( the beat is solemn, timid, and slow)... By the end of the song when the beat changes and he repeats this same thought he is realizing he is the one who did the leaving ( the beat quickens and becomes more confident and uplifting) ... It is a play on words... He was worth leaving.... He was worth more than the shallowness of this entity so he left... "I was the one worth leaving" ... I love the play on words there... so AWESOME!!!! |

I think the name tags are more symbolic for the fact that the group or person who has changed is so shallow that they all have to wear name tags to know each other because they never want to get below the surface.... They just want to know his name.... so he wears a name tag because he is just stranger visiting now... Name tags are very superficial after all.. And he is observing that this person or group of people around him is very superficial.... So he has a name tag on just so they will know who he is because that is all this person or group is concerned with... they want to know his name and that he doesn't belong here... But he is ok with not belonging there because he did realize by the end of the song that he was the one worth leaving... Only the play on words makes it sound like he was left... But he is saying he did the leaving... because he was worth more than what this group or person saw him as. |
