The word "cathode" comes from the Greek "kathodos", from kata - 'down' + hodos 'way.' 19th century scientist tried to use language to standardize engineering, so current would move East to West, as the sun appears to move in the sky. Scientist was wrong: 'as we now know, the Earth's magnetic field direction on which the "cathode" term is based is subject to reversals.' Ex-lover in the West and I'm back here (in Montreal)!
