Ed Sheeran – Wake Me Up Lyrics 14 years ago
Quite annoying that all the lyrics aren't there but anyway. To me, this seems to be about a far from perfect relationship that he's not really sure about and isn't the best partner in the world, however despite this he still loves her.

'I should ink my skin with your name.' At first, it seems he loves her 100% and is certain that what they have eturnal, but from how the song pans out, it seems more like he's just holding on to something that used to be there perhaps, and settling for what he has because part of him still believes they are supposed to be together.

'See I could do without a tan on my left hand where my fourth finger meets my knuckle'. There are certain things about the relationship he could 'do without' and doesn't really want.

'maybe you're loveable' - He's not really sure why it is that he loves her, he wonders if it's because she has a loveable personality & not because there's a connection between them.

'your eyes turn from green to grey in the winter I'll hold you in a cold place', this sounds slightly controlling to me. Her eyes are drained of colour in the Winter, however he keeps and holds her in the cold despite this? Neither of them seem entirely happy.

'But maybe I'm just in love when you wake me up', he's not in love with her all the time. But it's like she brings him down to Earth again and makes him realise certain things about himself, and this is why he fell in love with her in the first place, she understands him.

'And would you ever feel guilty if you did the same to me?' I'm not sure about this, but my mind brings it back to him being controlling, he asks If she'd feel guilty If she treated him the same way he treats her.

'And I know you love Shrek 'cos we've watched it twelve times
But maybe you're hoping for a fairy tale too' - this shows the repetition in their relationship, and she longs for a more perfect relationship than what they have.

'I'd go across and chuck all the controllers at the TV
And then you'd laugh at me and be asking me if I'm gonna be home next week', suggests anger? and that he's not with her a lot at home. It sounds like she's making more effort in the relationship.

'And you will never know just how beautiful you are to me'. This could go a couple of ways. She either has self esteem issues and cannot understand what he sees in her, OR she won't know because he can't express his feelings to her, and show how much he really loves her.

'And I think you hate the smell of smoke, you always try and get me to stop
You drink as much as me, and I get drunk a lot' - Again, they're not the perfect couple, they have insecurities and desires to get away from reality. He 'THINKS' she hates the smell of smoke, this suggests there is a lack of communication between them.

'So I take you to the beach and walk along the sand
And I'll make you a heart pendant with a pebble held in my hand
And I'll carve it like a necklace so the heart falls where your chest is
And now a piece of me is a piece of the beach and it falls just where it needs to be
And rests peacefully so you just need to breathe to feel my heart against yours now
Against yours now' - His tempo for this is a bit all over the place, which suggests to me that he is really expressing how much he loves her, but he's obviously not used to doing it, so it's not easy for him.

Maybe I'm far out from the message of the song and It's actually a proper deep love song, but to me there are a lot of implications that their relationship isn't as perfect as they want it to be/it used to be. The only bit I really don't understand is the bit about his passport?! So if anyone understands then please let me know haha! I really do love this song, whatever it's about - the simplicity is just amazing, it shows that there's no 'fireworks' or excitement in the relationship, it's repetable and shows they do love eachother, just in a more relaxed way.

Regina Spektor – The Flowers Lyrics 14 years ago
This song means a lot to me. Whilst getting through a difficult break up from my ex, I heard this song for the first time, and obviously, a broken heart makes your mind link everything to your sisuation. To me, this song spoke exactly how I was feeling. For a year my ex 'led me on' as you call it, telling me that MAYBE one day we'd get back together etc. These words and false hopes were the 'flowers' which I refused to 'throw away' and ignore. I felt our relationship had never reached it's full potential (some of the bulbs never opened quite fully), and I felt that if I let myself move on to someone else, I might miss out on my chance for us to get back together, so I waited. (They might so I'm waiting and staying awake). The 'allowed to keep' part is fantastic. To me, It's as though she's convincing herself and her friends that she's not being pathetic and what she's doing is harmless. Again, the 'I'll never know If I go to sleep' is the idea that If she moves on, she'll never know what could've been. It's probably not how Regina intended it to be, but to me, it means so much.
