| John Cale – My Maria Lyrics

Great, great song! So classic. I think it's about a Latin American revolution...Maria is pious and simple UNTIL she realizes how disgusting war really is. Then the ideas of God and country begin to crumble. The melody is stellar, as is the choir. |

| Lou Reed – Sad Song Lyrics

Isn't it interesting that an album as sobering as Berlin would end with the voice of the abusive husband who contributed to the abandonment of children and the suicide of his own wife? He has no qualms about it either ("Someone else would have broke both her arms.") and the half-enthusiastic chant of "sad song" only add to this effect. We can't mourn this situation anymore than he can; we are forced to say, "Oh, this is sad, let's move on." It's a stream of half hearted emotion that beautifully concludes this record. Lou gives voice to those forgotten. |

In my opinion, this is one of the most haunting and beautiful songs ever written. This is aftermath of the climax--an act of desperation after all is lost. It fits gorgeously between "The Kids" and segues well into the stunning, emotional dirge that is "Sad Song." The choir at the end only adds to the effect; it's a soulful conclusion to a powerful work. |

| The Velvet Underground – Heroin Lyrics

Thanks for sharing and I'm sorry to hear that...but are you saying that this song suggests that heroin is a fun and fine activity? I don't think this is a love song to heroin. I see it as quite the opposite. For me, it's about that back and forth feeling that comes along with drug use; the idea that drugs are somehow liberating, until you look around you and realize where you are. Each verse seems to encapsulate the American dream (the big decision, sailing the darkest seas, try for the kingdom), but they all culminate in addiction that falls into confusion and anarchy (I guess that I just don't know). In the end, Lou can sing honestly, "Heroin will be the death of me." Then again, the confusion and the problem with the addiction resurfaces. ("It's my wife and it's my life.") So, I don't think this song glamorizes or supports heroin addiction; it's about the battle that each addict faces. |

| Lou Reed – Caroline Says 2 Lyrics

Possibly the rawest song on Berlin and one of my personal favorites in Lou's catalogue. While the meaning of the song, I think, is clear, Lou compares Caroline's situation to her nickname "Alaska" to make the song seem extremely cold. In fact, Lou leaves the listener with nothing but chills with this one. |
