Just watched Trainspotting not ten minutes ago and had a weird moment of synchronicity. The song playing in the club when Renton first sees Diane is oddly similar to this. I tried playing this song to that scene and it actually fit really well. Anyone else know that scene? |

Firstly, I love this song. The best thing about it is the atmosphere of beauty and mystery that it carries. It's mesmerizing. So the interpretation - short and simple, I think it's about a negative relationship. Our protagonist is feeling mixed emotions. He has low self esteem and is verging on a legitamate depression. Or mabye he's already hit rock bottom, he doesn't know and doesn't care. Life is confusing enough anyways. The one light in his life is his love. But to call her his love is a mistake, he's afraid to commit to something more than just a fling. When he's with her he feels up and motivated, but when she leaves him, he gets depressed and feels low. And she does it often. He knows it's a mistake to run back and forth to her, but he can't help it, she's his feelgood adddiction. She hurts him sometimes - he won't ever tell, but his emotions are very fragile. As time passes they grow apart and his interest wanes. She finally leaves. And thats when his motor heart starts running again. It's cliche but the statement fits well, he doesn't realise what he has till it's gone. He can't help but fall for her again - it's a neverending cycle of addiction and depression. But maybe this time is the last time. Maybe she is gone for good and just a part of history. Maybe not. Even so, his motor heart, the generator, keeps running with no end in sight. It's a cruel yet beautiful story, with an ending better left unknown. |
