| This song will make a lot more sense to you once you figure out it's sung about two things at once. There is the surface, and there is the subtext. | |

Ya'll are going to love this. This song is about two naked babies staring at each other. One is at the moment not the sharpest tool in the shed. The other has a basic understanding of what is going on. The third language on the tablet we haven't Named yet. |

Finally, some people who actually listened to the song...interesting viewpoints! Regarding the fourth verse: If I really want to go out on a limb here, I'd point out that in the fourth verse, in a very literal sense the light of the sun is the source of all life and energy on Earth (except for a fairly limited supply of energy from deep sea thermal vents). It has done this for a very long time. What if he's taking a very long view in this fourth verse, and simply pointing out that until we are collectively better people we should simply breathe, live and survive another day, another season... --- Overall, I'd say this song explores the nature of the Second Truth, either intentionally or through convergent evolution. Of course, I feel that a lot of Tool's work has similar undercurrents: "The Second Truth, on the other hand, seeks to determine the cause of suffering. In Buddhism, desire and ignorance lie at the root of suffering. By desire, Buddhists refer to craving pleasure, material goods, and immortality, all of which are wants that can never be satisfied. As a result, desiring them can only bring suffering. Ignorance, in comparison, relates to not seeing the world as it actually is. Without the capacity for mental concentration and insight, Buddhism explains, one's mind is left undeveloped, unable to grasp the true nature of things. Vices, such as greed, envy, hatred and anger, derive from this ignorance." - http://www.pbs.org/edens/thailand/buddhism.htm |
