Circa Survive – Kicking Your Crosses Down Lyrics 14 years ago
No one can know exactly what Anthony Green means, so I'll say what it means to me:

>In case it gets away from us
Don't pull it close,

-Overall the song is a statement about religion (specifically, Christianity), but this line is more of a general ontological warning about belief. Don't put your faith in something you can't really trust, because it's likely to abandon you.

>the damage revealed the cost
And it wasn't worth it, but they'll never know
To keep in mind the line that separates idols
If the world is a dream and nothing is worth it
Unless you have a god. (We're all going to hell)

- What this says to me, is the "damage" is itself the "cost," meaning that the alienation suffered from one who doubts long-held beliefs reveals how deeply they were engrained. Therefore, to lose them means much mental anguish.
- Others will never realize the importance of not crossing that line, if they value their sanity (within the religious context, of course).

>But we wont be saved we'll live as slaves to love
What god takes away, let's refill all your holes with mud
Purchase your tickets; I'm kicking your crosses down.

- We (those caught in the gravity of religious belief) will not actually be saved from anything. Instead, we will be slaves to an ideology ("love"). What God takes away is the natural, wild ambition of the human spirit. Think about the powerful apocalyptic streak many Christians have. "We are just pilgrims passing through." Such ideology separates man from his animal nature, and that's why the line "Let's refill all the holes with mud" resonates so beautifully. The last line there just sums up his feelings: Get out! I'm tearing down your legacy.

>And all the voices sound just like you

- To me, it's like Daniel Quinn's "Mother Culture." He can't escape the overpowering presence of his beliefs. He's held them for too long. They are a part of him. And so ...

>I'll be there-
Breathe in-
It's been so long (I've felt so wrong again)
I fixed myself up nice but you never came
The words rolled off our backs and sound the same
I'll be waiting-
I hope that it's worth it but I'll never know

- He finally gives up resisting and falls down weakly.
- "I fixed myself up nice, but you never came." He sought some sort of absolution, but to no avail, yet he still cannot relinquish his attachment to religion. Attachment is what this whole album - "On Letting Go" - is about.
- "I hope that it's worth it, but I'll never know." That's the best anyone can hope for.
