Jackson Browne – The Load Out/Stay Lyrics 12 years ago
This is off the Running on Empty album, which was written and recorded during a tour. Many of the tracks refer to the difficult life out on the road, but this to me really nails that mixture of long hours of loneliness and boredom interspersed with brief periods of excitement and elation.

Probably my favourite album.

Sting – The Hounds Of Winter Lyrics 12 years ago
I love this song. My first wife walked out on our marriage at the beginning of November, so the juxtaposition of loss and the cold winter has real resonance for me. Even now, over 2 decades later, and happily married again, I still sometimes feel down at that same point in the year.

As ever, Sting has this amazing ability to capture in words what so many of us feel.

Sting – I'll Be Watching You Lyrics 12 years ago
Considering that this was one of the most popular songs that the Police put out, it has a very creepy lyric. Sting himself has expressed surprise at the success of this song which was basically about a stalker, and much darker than the popular conception of it.

Joni Mitchell – Furry Sings The Blues Lyrics 12 years ago
I love this song; it so neatly parallels the rundown state of the old parts of Memphis with the fate of so many of its early performers.

The pictures created by lines like;
Pawn shops glitter like gold tooth caps
In the grey decay

are so true. I remember the same in my own city when I was a child. Joni has a gift for capturing images like this.

Bonnie Raitt – Angel From Montgomery Lyrics 12 years ago
I have to agree with muzeecal.

Every time I hear this song I see mind-pictures of some 'white-trash' woman in a scruffy shack looking back on the train-wreck of her life.

The track just oozes melancholy and regret, which Bonnie captures perfectly in her performance. Wonderful.

Sting – I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying Lyrics 12 years ago
This was the story of my life for a time back in 1984.

Even now, years on, happily married to someone else, I get goosepimples when I hear the lyrics. The bit about the Sunday fathers (or Saturday in my case) is so so true.

What a gift to be able to express tragic experience in as beautiful and concise a form as this!

Bonnie Raitt – Love Has No Pride Lyrics 12 years ago
Can't believe no-one has commented on this. After my wife left me, this was my story for several months until I got my life back together again.

Anyone who has been dumped badly must relate to this.

Jackson Browne – Fountain Of Sorrow Lyrics 12 years ago
Just after I got married, a friend took some portrait photos of my wife at my request. The results were stunning, but there was a hint of a hard, tough streak in her face in some of the prints, which I had never noticed in real life. 12 years later, she walked out and soon married someone else.

So the lines;
There were one or two I know that you would have liked a little more,
But they didn't show your spirit quite as true.

certainly has a resonance for me. Jackson has a way of putting across life's experiences in such a brilliant way.

Jackson Browne – Sky Blue and Black Lyrics 12 years ago
Like randy1111 I love the lines;

You're the color of the sky
Reflected in each store-front window pane
You're the whispering and the sighing
Of my tires in the rain
You're the hidden cost and the thing that's lost
In everything I do

If you are lucky enough to enjoy or have enjoyed that kind of love with another, these words are just a magical interpretation of how that feels. Jackson does this kind of thing so well.

Little Feat – Hangin' On To The Good Times Lyrics 12 years ago
I love this nostalgiafest of a song.

To me it just summarises the experiences of a bunch of old mates getting together again and talking about old times.

Jackson Browne – The Pretender Lyrics 12 years ago
Like Hosterton I love the line

And we'll fill in the missing colors
In each other's paint-by-number dreams

I'm so lucky to have found a lovely lady and we have been able to do that.

I also find the following passage so telling;

Leaving nothing for the others
But to choose off and fight
And tear at the world with all their might
While the ships bearing their dreams
Sail out of sight

How often have I seen just that in other relationships, but so beautifully expressed here.

Jackson Browne – Love Needs a Heart Lyrics 12 years ago
Jackson Browne is just an amazing lyric writer;

Love won't come near me, she don't even hear me
She walks past my vacancy sign

That is just wonderful. Most of us have been there at some point in our lives. What a gift to be able to encapsulate what i such a common experience with such clarity.
