Ian Dury And The Blockheads – Mash It Up Harry Lyrics 14 years ago
Although I've never heard it used before, I think "Wembley" is Dury's rhyming slang (a London thing)for "gay". The road leading to Wembley Stadium is Wembley Way. Wembley = Wembley Way = Gay!

I think he cleverly balances slagging Harry off a bit with defending his sexual preferences - ultimately Harry's a "real Golden Wonder" and "...made of flesh and blood" - magnificent!

Quincy Jones – Ai No Corrida Lyrics 14 years ago
Unbelievable that there's so little comment - and it looks like there's only one every two years!

The title comes from a highly sexual Japanese film (English language title: "In the Realm of the Senses"), which is based on the true story of a Geisha who falls in love with a customer and has an intense relationship with him - it's a very difficult watch!

The song was written by English funkster Chaz Jankel. I think he only used the film title as something of a joke and to emphasise the intensity of the love he's expressing.

Jankel was Ian Dury's song-writing collaborator, adding the funky riffs to Jury's acerbically witty lyrics - if you're unaware of them, you have a treat in store. Start with "New Boots and panties".

Rickie Lee Jones – Chuck E.'s In Love Lyrics 14 years ago
Thanks to "Nellie" for the additional background.

Chuck E Weiss has released a hand-full of wistful, bluesy and witty albums, which I highly recommend - "Extremely Cool", if I had to pick one.

Also, RLJ is the mystery blonde featured on the cover of Waits' (brilliant, as ever) "Blue Valentine" album.

It does sound like "pip" - any further thoughts?

Alabama 3 – The Old Purple Tin (9% Pure Heaven) Lyrics 14 years ago
Quality! An anthem to what truly made Scotland the country it is! (Don't get shirty! I'm one of them too!)

Joni Mitchell – Don Juan's Reckless Daughter Lyrics 14 years ago
I struggle to understand why Dylan is held in such accepted esteem, while Joni is relatively overlooked and always judged on "Blue" much more than her jazz-influenced masterpieces.

Glad to get that off my chest!

Joni Mitchell – Otis & Marlena Lyrics 14 years ago
I'd be really interested, if anyone knows the definitive answer.

I'd always presumed the song was probably written during/ after the Opec Oil Crisis (1973) and referred to muslim states holding the US government to ransom over oil exports.

The rich, elderly subjects of the song seem blissfully ignorant of any political crisis, while they spend their abundant funds on beauty treatments etc.

I think it's more about Florida and it's American tourist trade generally (ref "Some Like It Hot"!), rather than the hotel specifically.
