| Bobbie Gentry – Ode To Billie Joe Lyrics

This song causes the listener to visualize the story and fill in the details about their relationship and what is thrown off the bridge. And everyone writes in their own story - which is great!
But I think the point of the song is in nature of the conversation over dinner. The news devastates the narrator (she can't eat) while the family goes on eating and talking. Everyone is so wrapped up in their own lives. |

I like your two layer idea. To me personally the verses are about a speciific relationship though. She is in a relationship that has lost some of the excitement ( "there we both were in that little house just hanging out" ). Bored, she tries another guy ( "I wanted to know what he was like" followed by a missing line of verse - a very meaningful four-beat pause) and loses the one she had. Now looking back she thinks maybe she was wrong to make that trade. |

Heaven, hell, whatever is at the end of the road. "Uncle Joe" is a motorcycle rider who dies, probably while riding (he makes "that first mistake"). Seger asks the listener if they want to take their chances - win or lose. |
