| Ray Charles – You Are My Sunshine Lyrics | 14 years ago |

Well, Ray Charles pulls his classic performance trick on this one, splitting the verses between himself and one of the Raelettes' girls to create a pretty vivid argument between the two. This really changes the song, from a slow development of the idea that the lovers have separated, to a very fast, upbeat version, which makes the whole thing a lot more dramatic, but actually detracts from the sense of sadness and despair present in the original. I love the way Ray sings the first verse and chorus, but after that I can't help but think of this version as a bit of a marketing ploy. Still, it rocks along pretty easily. |

| Ray Charles – You Don't Know Me Lyrics | 14 years ago |

I love the line 'You think you know me well' in this song. It seems to contain the frustration of the speaker, who desperately wants the girl to know him well, and is angry (perhaps even insulted) that she thinks she has achieved this already, when he had so much more to offer. He feels compelled to blame her for the misunderstanding (with the use of 'anyone can tell' and the repetition of 'YOU don't know me'), but evidently understands that actually he is mostly at fault for being so passive ('Afraid and shy, I let my chance go by'). For me, the song is about the naivety of a 'first love,' which affects you intensely and yet you don't have the experience to know how to deal with it. |
