| I admit I didn't want to read your post at first when I saw you thought it was the F word, and I'm sorry, lol. After reading what you wrote I really enjoyed your words. Thank you for sharing them with me! | |

When I first came on here I was not planning on posting my own personal views on this song since I believe it can mean whatever each person wants it to mean. This being said, I was disheartened at the first few posts I read talking about the word HATE. That emotion soon passed me when the next few posts I read were discussing the idea that the four letter word was a swear word. I was then beyond words. I almost felt the need to post my opinion here. It takes many words to describe the emotional roller coaster I rode the first time I heard this song and the almost 20 times in a row thereafter, so please if you really care about hearing what other peoples' opinions are about song meanings and the meaning of life, bear with me. The title of the song refers to the author seeing the word "LOVE" written in crayon on the subway wall all over a bunch of advertisements and he or she saw a story unfold in their mind, as I did. And I would like to share that story with you. In the beginning of the song the man is standing in anticipation in the shadows of the subway waiting for the last train of the night so he can throw himself in front of it. If you can look beyond the fact that he wants to kill himself to see the fact the he is waiting for the last train so his death won't inconvience anyone by closing the subway because it's closing anyway. This testifies to his purity that even though he wants to end his own life he doesn't want to bother anyone with his death because he is doubting his own self worth. He is waiting with his hand in his pocket holding his child's crayon, like a rosary, in his hand looking at all the advertisements posted on the wall which represent how our society has evolved to value money and material things instead of our own flesh and blood (be it your child or your parent or just humanity). Now the train begins to approach the station and it's almost as if his prayer has been answered when the doors of the train open to greet him as the song describes the carriage arriving to meet the groom to sweep him of on the honeymoon of his life. This was God answering his prayer. But then he hesitates and draws even further into the shadows (which symbolizes the idea of "the valley of the shadow of death" or any darkness we are going through in our lives) because of his doubt and the doors suddenly close and the train sweeps away silently into the night like a prayer swept away by the wind. And the man holds the crayon tighter in his hand in his pocket which symbolizes his trying to get closer to God and hear God's word to tell him what to do. All of a sudden he quickly brings his hand out of his pocket holding the crayon and as if unable to control himself he writes the word "LOVE" which is the single worded poem because that single word inspired the poem that became the song that became my telling to you. He writes it symbolically as if unconscienciously declaring his value of his LOVE for his child over all those things posted on the wall. As if that wasn't deep enough, it describes his heart "laughing, screaming, pounding" which symbolizes his faith returning to him and he is overcome by it. And he notices that the word he just wrote in written in the dark and he turns to see what is causing the shadow and he sees the the shadow on the wall in the shadow from an exite light, which symbolizes that LOVE can light the way when you are in the darkness. And the he finds the courage through the LOVE of his child to return into the "night womb" which means the darkness of the night of the troubles of his life because he knows he has his child. This is the end of my personal view on this song, but I would like to share one more moment with you if you care to read on. I believe that all songs and movies are God's way of speaking to us and we hear certain songs at certain times when we need them. These stories can be considered stories like the Bible to demonstrate the way God touches individual lives. Whether we call it fate or coincidence or whatever name, we can all hold these same truths as humans. I remember hearing in the movie "American History X" as saying that goes something like: If you can't figure out how to end a paper then use a quote because someone else has already saying the same thing and they have said it better. So I would like to share a quote from the movie "V for Vendetta" for taking the time to read my thoughts no matter why you decided to read them. "What I hope most of all is that you understand what I mean when I tell you that though I do not know you and even though I may never meet you, laugh with you, cry with you, or kiss you, I love you. With all my heart, I love you." |
