Jeffree Star – beauty killer Lyrics 14 years ago
To me, this song is about the the trauma of becoming an object subject to society's desires. The way he speaks about his own death as being of minimal concern in comparison to vanity makes it seem as though he says it out of conformation to expectations. He's allowed the media to control him and change him into something he's not. He is his own piece of art, and regardless of how much he hates himself for it, he lets his own obsession with conforming to society's ideals control his every move. ("...Faking perfection wasn't worth the wait.") His voice is so monotone throughout the song until he sings the actual words "I'm a beauty killer"... The sadness in his voice practically gets me into tears. The title means that he's destroying the idea of what beautiful is, because it's shown us what devastating psychological effects that the media is constantly pushing onto people. Last night I went to zellers to pick up some drapes and as I was standing in line at the cashier a rack of magazines caught my eye- Every single one of them was either something to do with weight loss, beauty tips, celebrity fashion or sex. We pick it up everywhere. Society's messages are abundant, addictive, and persuasive, much like a quick-fix pill ("Doll eyes stare into valium colored skies...") Jeffree has a "sweet tooth" for these quick fixes- I believe at the point where he sings in 2nd person (using the word 'you') He's speaking directly to society (his listeners) about how they unknowingly control his life and have shaped him over time into what he's become. The song's technical formation (heavy autotune, electric beat, layover edits, etc) symbolizes the synthetic nature of beauty in today's society. Absolutely incredible. This man is not only a musical genius, but a genius among members of society.
