well, all of these comments are on the right track, but the house of the rising sun id a prostitution house. When it says " its been the ruin of many poor boys" that means that any boys have been sucked in to the house and consumed with evil. and when he talks about his father and mother he is saying that he had a hard life and that was his only way to escape from it, but he hates the sin and wants to run away from the house of the rising sun. |

i have to dissagree, i think that every song (especially this song) comes from the inside, and always has a special meaning. this song is about a place of disturbance and pain in which these two people are trying to escape from. they basicly run away, but sadly get trapped and need a place of saftey and hope. she remembers a light house neerby and also a haunting goust that once saves her life, and the goust story: had a lover and lover never came back, she now waits for him to return. as they enter the house the door locks and now there are three gousts. this song also represents everlasting love and what people will do when they are overwhelmed with the feeling |
