I think there is a car crash involved in the story of this song. I had no idea it's a Max Payne OST, so my interpretation is independent of that. So. The couple's driving on a highway, drinking too ("beer cans" HAS to have some significance, and i think this is it). A deer appears in front of them ("deer's eyes") and causes the accident. Right from the first stanza i felt this, and the rest didn't seem to contradict at all. The emphasis on asphalt. "crushed plans" seems a pun on the couple's dreams and plans, and the crushed car. The other stanzas, like the one with the breath upon the cheek, imo, are flashbacks while he's lying injured. It's plausible too. These are all the things he's remembering in his dying moments. From these stanza's, it seems they were running away from their lives, trying to change them ("trails gone cold behind us"). The devil stanza completely agrees with this story. He is, in his own way, cursing his luck. Blaming the devious devil for it. "flaming hair" could be a literal description. "hide and seek" refers to the post accident scenario when they are barely conscious and looking for each other. The only hitch is, i don't get the next stanza. It could be talking about his thoughts when they were driving; he wants her to live to grow old. But it seems like a stretch. On the other hand, the title makes no sense at all then, lol.
