| Rise Against – Hero of War Lyrics | 9 years ago |

This is my take on the meaning: He said son, have you seen the world? Well, what would you say if I said that you could Just carry this gun, you'll even get paid I said that sounds pretty good Black leather boots Spit-shined so bright They cut off my hair but it looked alright We marched and we sang We all became friends As we learned how to fight A hero of war Yeah that's what I'll be And when I come home They'll be damn proud of me I'll carry this flag To the grave if I must Cause it's a flag that I love And a flag that I trust - He was recruited to fight in the war and thought he would be a hero (and get paid for it as well as seeing the world) I kicked in the door I yelled my commands The children, they cried But I got my man We took him away A bag over his face From his family and his friends They took off his clothes They pissed in his hands I told them to stop But then I joined in We beat him with guns And batons not just once But again and again A hero of war Yeah that's what I'll be And when I come home They'll be damn proud of me I'll carry this flag To the grave if I must Cause it's a flag that I love And a flag that I trust She walked through bullets and haze I asked her to stop I begged her to stay But she pressed on So I lifted my gun And I fired away And the shells jumped through the smoke And into the sand That the blood now had soaked She collapsed with a flag in her hand A flag white as snow A hero of war Is that what they see? Just medals and scars So damn proud of me And I brought home that flag Now it gathers dust But it's a flag that I love The only flag that I trust - Returning home people think he's a hero when they don't know the bad things that happen in war. Like in the last chorus: A hero of war, Is that what they see?, "JUST" medals and scars, So damn proud of me A lot of people only see the hero part of it, not all the downfalls/hardship of the people fighting [like the person he shot who was carrying a white flag (surrendering)] A lot of soldiers come back with things like PTSD, etc. and all a lot of people see is the "HERO" and the "MEDALS", etc. |

Why does everything have to circle around religion?? this song is in reference to the BP Oil Spill and Katrina. "We keep axes in the attic, to see cameras in the sky" is referring to the news helicopters that were filming the aftermath of Katrina, while few if any where helping. The crescent city is another name for New Orleans... the giants in the sky preparing to unleash a mighty cry is referring to Katrina the storm... It's easier if you watch the music video: youtube.com/watch?v=JHiqGqoIGII |

This song is referring to Katrian and the lack of help that LA. was given along with the BP Oil Spill... The song was inspired by McIlrath's time in New Orleans while on a tour break and the massive amounts of destruction he witnessed in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast after both Hurricane Katrina and the BP oil disaster. McIlrath has also stated in recent interviews that the song - while having the lyrics pertaining to Hurricane Katrina and the BP oil disaster - can be in reference to any world issue. |

My thoughts on the song is that it isn't a diss on anyone in the military, but against war itself. Everyone thinks of people in the military who fight in wars as heros, but that's not all there is to war (as this song explains)... Example: "She walked through bullets and haze I asked her to stop I begged her to stay But she pressed on So I lifted my gun And I fired away" "And the shells jumped through the smoke And into the sand That the blood now had soaked She collapsed with a flag in her hand A flag white as snow" The killing of innocent people... "A hero of war Is that what they see? Just medals and scars So damn proud of me And I brought home that flag Now it gathers dust But it's a flag that I love The only flag that I trust" Meaning all people think of is a person being JUST a Hero of War, not all the casulties, etc. that they went through... especially when there is more to it than what most people see. This song is a diss on war and how un-needed a lot of it is all because most people think about fighting rather than getting along. |

| Also "This life chose me, I'm not lost in sin" is referring to the religious people who translate the Bible to spread their hate saying it's a sin and that you chose to be gay. When in fact it is the total opposite. | |

Being gay and being bullied a lot, I think the "The Shotguns Loaded" verse is referring to the person being bullied mindset, about to explode because they can't take anymore. Some lash out with anger, but for a LGBT person who feels fear, and that their life is worthless, it usually ends in suicide, vs. relatiation against someone else (even though some do that). I think it mostly referring to the bullied person's mindset tinking at the their last moment "I'll get back at them for...." or "They won't have me to push around anymore..." etc. Hope that helps it make more sense. And yes most of the references are of Tyler. As for the others who commited suicide in Sept. 2010, even though they are tragic as well, this song only refers to those listed because they dealt with the anti-gay bullying. Also, if I remember right, I heard (I think on Degrassi, when Cam commited suicide in the Bitter Sweet Symphony episode) that for every suicide there are 25 unknown attempts. I agree this needs to stop.... |

| "For those they chose to kiss" isn't referring to the belief of some that being gay is a choice. I can't help gay, that's not a choice, but chosing to kiss jack instead of sam, or anyone for that matter is the choice, not who you're attracted to. | |

| Frontman Tim McIlrath spoke about this song: "The song was written inspired of the teen suicides in the month of September 2010, who were bullied for being homosexual. It deals about how people are treated from homophobic bullying and feeling so tormented that they feel there's no place for them in the future and that killing themselves is a better option. It was written by my nephew, who wrote it about his best friend. His friend had killed himself a week before it was written." | |

| It is refering to the anti-gay bullying of the LGBT community. The lyrics that show this are the ones you pointed out and "Born free, but still they hate. Born me, no I can't change", "The gatherings hold candles, but not their tongues", "And too much blood has flown from the wrists, of the children shamed for those they chose to kiss", and of course the names that are read off at the end of the song are those who commited suicide because of being bullied for being gay. | |

The song is about the anti-gay bullying of LGBT youth, however it can be used for basically any type of bullying, but it's mainly in regards to bullying of gay youth. Being bullied for being gay, I can relate to this song: here is what I thinnk the meaning is: Woah, woah. “Bang bang go the coffin nails, Like a breath exhaled, Then gone forever.” “It seems like just yesterday, How did I miss the red flags raise?” “Think back to the days we laughed, We braved these bitter storms together.” Refers to the death, and how some where friends when they were younger…. “Brought to his knees he cried,” “But on his feet he died.” The torment and constant bullying brought him to his knees crying (cause all of us want to be liked and accepted), but on his feet he died is referring to the attitude like “I’ll get back at them…” choosing the ultimate end… What God would damn a heart? And what God drove us apart? What God could Refers to what God would cause this… No God would want this for his people…. Make it stop Let this end Eighteen years pushed to the ledge. It's come to this, A weightless step. On the way down singing, Woah, woah. This is mostly referring to how Tyler died when he was 18, however if you take out the references to Tyler, it can be basically many years of being pushed to the ledge of ending it all… it’s come to this, the end…. Bang bang from the closet walls, The schoolhouse halls, The shotgun's loaded. Push me and I'll push back. I'm done asking, I demand. Refers to having to be closeted about your orientation (having to hide) and being bullied in school… The shotgun’s loaded, push me and I’ll push back” is referring to the person being bullied, about the rage of being tormented, etc. and how they just want it to end (not really about a school shooting, but some do take that route). “From a nation under God, I feel it's love like a cattle prod. Born free, but still they hate. Born me, no I can't change.” Refers to how people say they love the person but not the so-called sin (mostly religious), when they actually hate the person. Born free, but still they hate. Born me, no I can’t change. Refers to being born this way and can’t change who they are, however people still hate them. It's always darkest just before the dawn. So stay awake with me, let's prove them wrong. Make it stop. Let this end, Eighteen years pushed to the ledge. It's come to this, A weightless step. On the way down singing, Woah, woah. “The cold river washed him away, But how could we forget. The gatherings hold candles But not their tongues.” Refers to the memorial for the person’s death, how they hold candles, but still can’t stop the verbal abuse, comments, etc. “And too much blood has flown from the wrists, Of the children shamed for those they chose to kiss. Who will rise to stop the blood.” For those they chose to kiss, isn’t meaning that being gay is a choice, it just means you chose who you chose to kiss or even to kiss anyone for that matter, but not about who you are attracted to, that isn’t a choice. Although, all of us want someone to be with. We're calling for Insisting on A different beat, yeah A brand new song Woah, woah. (Tyler Clementi age 18) A brand new song Woah, woah. (Billy Lucas age 15) Woah, woah. (Harrison Chase Brown age 15) Woah, woah. (Cody J. Barker age 17) (Seth Walsh age 13) Make it stop. Let this end, This life chose me, I'm not lost in sin But proud I stand Of who I am I plan to go on living Make it stop. Let this end, All these years pushed to the ledge. But proud I stand Of who I am I plan to go on living |

I think that this song is a reflection back into Pink's life.... when he was younger between school, etc his life was dull.... so he goofed around.... Then at the end of the song, "when you're older, "Home, home again I like to be here when I can When I come home cold and tired It's good to warm my bones beside the fire". I think this refers to how his life is now.... on the fast track, spinning out of control and how he longs to be younger and be able to be home and relax with his family...... Just my thoughts.... :-) |
