| Bat for Lashes – Pearl's Dream Lyrics | 14 years ago |

Natasha Khan (aka Bat for Lashes) delves heavily into the mystical and occult and religious realms for most of the lyrics that make this album, appropriately titled 'two suns.' Also I think the fact that the lyrics here are not 100% clear is because their nature is to reference historical events and there are many play on words going on throughout the entire album. such as sun and son, night and knight etc. Firstly, to grasp the depth these lyrics in-particular 'Pearl's Dream' first we need to know who pearl is... "A concept album,[12] Two Suns focuses on Khan’s desert-born alter ego Pearl, whose personality she adopted while staying in New York to gain a better understanding of the character." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bat_for_Lashes In pop music there is a common theme of female 'recording artists' adopting alter egos. Generally having alter egos is a symptom of certain neurological disorders. But seems perfectly ok for pop stars. I digress... onto the lyrical interpretation... The song starts with Natasha (adopting Pearl's POV) singing the song expressing a longing for a place unknown to her. The fact that she sings, "There's a place I MUST go" implies she(natasha) may be being forced to go there. She knows this is a dark place 'where the stars do drown' Followed by: "but a star in me needs to be free" I think these two lines illustrate the duality of Light and Dark and the inherent struggle between these two forces on a cosmic level. The official music video seems to support this hypothesis as natasha plays herself and pearl. Pearl(blonde hair- dressed all in black) is watching Natasha from the audience she appears skeptical of Natasha. Natasha is depicted in a blue setting surrounded by planets and stars, fog and mist and a wolf- on a stage perhaps. there's a place i must go there's a place i must go it's not a place i have seen but i'll get there in a new(blue?) dream down the ocean road past a sign that says 'good left town' into a darkness where the stars do drown but a star in me needs to be free It would seem that Pearl has been promised rewards, a sun infact, for participating in a battle. Continuing the duality theme of light and dark, we could assume Pearl is the darker side of Natasha and needs energy from stars, (hence why stars are drowned) This is visually represented in the video as well when she gets close to one of the stars hanging on the stage she zaps it with her fingers. "but with a thousand nights gone to any kingdom i run" it seems she's been waiting for a thousand nights without any light from the sun she'd been promised now she will go anywhere to find what she seeks. and when the battle was done i was promised my sun but with a thousand nights gone to any kingdom i run to be continued... |
