The song is known for its distinct time signatures and corresponding lyrical patterns. The time signatures of the chorus of the song change from 9/8 to 8/8 to 7/8; as drummer Danny Carey says, "It was originally titled 9-8-7. For the time signatures. Then it turned out that 987 was the 17th number of the Fibonacci sequence. So that was cool."[1] It is also apparent that the lyrics are arranged in ascending then descending order of the Fibonacci sequence, which is 1,1,2,3,5,8, based on their syllables. For instance, the first line is "Black. Then. White are. All I see. In my infancy. Red and Yellow then came to be. Reaching out to me. Lets me see."[2] and further examples below. taken from wikipedia.there's a lot more about this song there so go check it out.as being too obscure, this song actualy appears to be one of the clearst from tool. |

so, for all the "broken relationship theory" foloowers, here is some explanation why at least one of the meanings of this song STRONGLY relates to religion and myths: 1. as everybody had noticed the title refers to a split of church dogma's and taken the title itslef it's a good guess that mjk uses this as a metaphore for a broken relationship. 2."i know the pieces fit..." -many of the primitive believes even reaching the stage where they organize themselves into religion were based on a creational myth which professor Campbel(and i believe Keenah read his books) calls the "one containing two" and "the one containing many".it is a very specific mythological form that appeared repeatedly in many points of the world in ancient times.now look at it with the eyes of a modern man, someone who knows enough abouth the big bang theory.... 3."mildewed and smoldering, fundamental diferring"we go to the same myths which even nowadays you can find in india and find that they state that everything that existed was one(usualy dead diety) and there alwasy will be terrible anxiety in evey human being, untill the parts don't unite again.so if you look it that way, can't it be that we're talking about this feeling of loss and that the comunication between 2 parts that were one in the past will never be the same???so Keenan might be handling the story from a diferrent point of view(as he always does) but can't you see the reference? 4. the words "coveting" and "lost sense of compassion" if we put it that way should also referense to how stupid it is when elements of the same bigger "thing" treat each other as enemies. And as last words i have to say that i don't deny the treatment of these lyrics as "read between the lines" tragic love story.as both stories can be storngly related to the song maybe the idea originaly was to compile them both into one song. |

| i wouldn't be so bold trying to dismantle any of keenan's lyrics, so its just my request for all these guys that read everything literally. Please, don't!this song is about everything else, but not about being drunk. and also if you have ever noticed, keena often says he'll never disclose what he was thinking of while writing a particular song(reminds me of nirvana and their obscure lyrics dow) | |

the conection with hamlet is i believe too obvious and comented many times in magazines and on the web.but i would like to say, there is a pinch of diferrent handling of Hamlet's lyrics as well.you can hear the narator talking obscurly about cycles of life(or eons in another line) and the narrator also refers to doing things "in spite of yourself" and also the parts taken from the play are part being overlooked by many readers. so i take it this song tells the way it's author understands the play and what he makes of it. so it is about the twists and turns that our faith so often takes and the way the narrator believes we have to handle them. |

| i pretty much agree with you even dow not everybody will accept it.the firsst time you hear this it is obvious that it is about someones betrayal.but the more i listen to it, it was sounding like a story of the feelings of a molested child, when she has grown. i believe that you're taking the "god" part too literealy.i think both the last 2 lines you quote are beautiful poetric forms, probably the best i've ever met in a rock song.both are showing how far from human the abuser had gone, and as you know that the stains always reamin on the abused as well, this is how his victim also feels.it is said that actualy she WANTS her flesh o fall down her bones, so isn't it correct to believe it is about herself feeling disscusted by her body? | |
