I almost forgot that "cum" is slang for semen. Got REALLY confused for a minute there. Yeah, I thought that part was painfully obvious too. |

The "third planet" is obviously referring to earth, as in the third planet from the sun. I think the song in general is a reference to humans' bizarre behaviors, especially in the debate between Scientology and Christianity. There are obvious references to our obsession with finding intelligent life on other planets. Of course "the universe is shaped exactly like the earth" isn't a literal statement; it's a reference to the early ideas of geocentricism as a metaphor for humans' assumption that, if I may use a lame pun, the universe revolves around us (metaphorically speaking). The eye in the sky, I believe, is God. I think the entire purpose of this song was to make us step back and look at ourselves from a third person (sorry with the lame puns again) perspective and realize how bizarre humanity really is. It seems as though there are also references to the Garden of Eden here, like "didn't know then; it was a son; it was a daughter" and the syndication of "the water and the oceans and our bodies" etc. As for the "baby cum angels," I heard it as "they become angels," but I'm probably wrong. In fact, this entire interpretation is probably wrong, but it answers the question right above the comment box; "What does this song mean to you?" |

Never heard the song, but the lyrics remind me of the book I Am the Cheese by Robert Cormier. It's pretty emotionally heavy, but I'd still recommend reading it. |

| Vampire Weekend – I Think Ur a Contra Lyrics
| 14 years ago
|
Contra, as a prefix, means against. In the interviews quoted above, it sounds like Koenig wanted to leave it open to interpretation, a technique used by many indie artists, often with the intention of connecting to their audience in a more personal way. To me, it seems like the word "contra" in this text is used to refer to someone who goes against what is widely accepted or mainstream.
The first two stanzas are about how the narrator and whoever he's talking to are the same in that they are different.
"My revolution thoughts" are the rebellious ideas that the two 'contras' (the narrator and the person he's singing about) agree on.
"It's not useful now / since we both made up our minds / you're going to watch out for yourself / and so will I" is the narrator telling the counterpart not to voice his/her 'contra' opinions to the world so as not to look odd.
"You wanted good schools / friends with pools / You're not a contra" To the narrator, these are seen as mainstream desires.
"You wanted rock-and-roll / complete control / well, I don't know" These things could go either way.
The rest is pretty self-explanatory. |
