| Thrice – As The Crow Flies Lyrics | 10 years ago |

I never really understood this song, but I was literally just in the midst of doing a book-review on N. T. Wright's 'The Challenge of Jesus' when I came across this: "How often," said Jesus, "would I have gathered you as a hen gathers her chicks under her wing, and you would not. Behold, your house is left desolate." This, too, is a warning of judgment upon the God-forsaken Temple. But the image of hen and chicks again indicates Jesus' intention vis-a-vis that judgment. **The picture is of a farmyard fire; the hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and when the fire has run its course, there will be found a dead hen scorched and blackened, but with live chicks under her wing. Jesus seems to be indicating his hope that he would take upon himself the judgement that was hanging over the nation and city.** The imagery is all too similar to be mere coincidence, except for the crow reference...so I looked it up. "As the crow flies" is another term for a beeline: an idiom for the shortest distance between two points. At the risk of abusing allegory --pardon me if I do -- it seems like a perfect picture of the Gospel. Christ takes the punishment of our sin upon Himself, giving us hope of eternal life...the only (shortest) way to God the Father across this infinite chasm of sin. |

| Thrice – Words in The Water Lyrics | 14 years ago |

@jcanfield "They were honey on my lips..." How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! -Psalm 119:103 "Bitter twist in my side..." I though that this had something to do with Paul's reference to a thorn in his side (2 Corinth. 12:7), but it's not. "The word began to rise from their place..." The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. -John 6:63 "I knew they'd lay me in my grave 'Is there no one who could save me?' I cried" The letter kills but the Spirit gives life. -2 Corinthians 3:6 Lol basically...they're doctrinally sound...which is why their music not only ministers to me but also convicts me (e.g. Promises, Yellow Belly). Had me on my knee's repenting. I think this is the depth and tone of music Jesus would listen to...theologically accurate truths conveyed through raw dysphemism artistry. |

| Thrice – Treading Paper Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| Interesting revelation I got on the key lines "Treading Paper in the space between the words"...Words denote meaning, definition, character, purpose, direction...as opposed to the spaces in between them (as a blank page). Furthermore...the posture of being contained in this space b/w words is resultant of ignorance...ignorance toward anything BUT logic (fathomless, transcendant). Ignorance toward deep intuition. It's interesting to think that he alludes to atheistic evidence/logic as treading space (emptiness, lacking substance) and the invisible, intangible, unfathomable aspects I believe he refers to as words (substantial, vital; the hidden, underlying reason for our existence). | |
| Thrice – Call It in the Air Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| It's amazing how intentional their musicality is...you get a deep sense of urgency and ominous inevitability when listening to this; as if time's running out. Definitely about certifying your stance on decisions...either hot or cold...the lukewarm will be vomited out. | |
| Thrice – A Song For Milly Michaelson Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| Is that Dustin singing? I had odd hypothesis (based on the differentiating vocal tone/intensity) that the singer is actually Teppei...he perfectly encompasses the character (considering the interviews i've seen of him; he doesn't say much, humble, but when he does it's something meaningful). I wouldn't put it past them to intentionally alternate musical roles for a specific purpose as this song. | |
