| If you are fortunate enough to never relate to this song, then consider yourself lucky. It's about the end of a relationship. That moment when you realize all of the right timing of saying something to change it has gone out the window. Your former partner could be moving on to someone else or just tired of the exhausting feeling of trying to make it work. It is that moment after you've both been talking in circles for so long that nothing makes since anymore. Afterwards, you may reflect on the relationship and see the most obvious times where saying something assertive or expressing your needs would have made a difference. You may even grasp at hope thinking that if you tell them where you went wrong they would forgive you or understand it can work out. Usually, this means very little to people and they just stare at you with a blank stare, hug you, and say, "I'm sorry that it didn't work out." That feeling of not being worth a second chance is the worst feeling. | |

I think the train reference is just a sound the author associates with the past (could be the hometown, location, etc). I feel I can relate to this song a lot and that it refers to a relationship that was at one point and time intense and seemingly never ending. However, certain factors changed all of that. People change, especially when they are younger. It's about recalling a time when a person tried to hold onto a relationship, all the while remaining stubbornly to his or her own ideals of what they need to do (as for when a person is young this could be education, life goals, etc). Sometimes this means that people have to separate to become the person desired. It's like a person is thinking of this relationship, maybe first thing in the morning... but is reminded that that period of time is over and no longer a reality.. They are not the same people, and life has sucked the sense of hope from all that they were. They are resolved to reminding themselves ... "But I don't feel you stir beside me, and you're not in my morning hours. Some ties are made to break; some stocks grow high and green to rot away. And these lines tell the truth, these city veins answer all they do I got wise and I got old Not once, not once did I fold Maybe you bet on me, while we were still young enough to know, to believe." Then the person shifts from the thought of the loss of love, to the fact that they still kept a part of themself. They did what they thought they needed to do at the time, and they have to take comfort in that decision. People aren't omniscient and can simple only make decisions based on the knowledge they have at the time. In the end, you alone have to live with yourself. "But for every year you took, for every soft breath of love and learn, Believe me I got wise and I got old Not once, not once did I fold." |

| PS- You may even start knocking back drinks.. and every one is staring at you because every one knows your history and they're waiting on your reaction. Small towns are no fun. They invent the meaning of "you can't go home." | |

I have to admit, I quite enjoy this song. I've always liked the script, but they tend to get overplayed which kills it for me usually. However, this rings true in its simplicity. If you're here reading this .. then you've probably been in that terrible post breakup place where you're friends take you out to make you "forget." But eventually you reach a point where the alcohol does nothing but make you realize how hurt you are and you attempt to call that person up. You're convinced you can change their mind, you pour your heart out, and they don't respond with anything. You then proceed to be that drunk mess parading around the bars to which your friends exchange "knowing" looks regarding. Depending on the severity of the breakup, you eventually stop trying to numb the pain. Whether it takes 5 or 50000 drinks, you'll realize that the only thing that numbs it is space and time. |

This song rings so true it's beyond not funny. If you've ever been young and in love you understand how hard it can be to move on. You may physically move, but there are typically holidays or events that usually bring you back to that same place. You can go back and visit convinced that you've moved on.. and be out catching up with old friends over a few drinks.. when enter.. the person you thought you were over. You honestly didn't expect to run into to them or to react in such a way. You're already spinning from the wine and the old familiar feelings are easily stirred because you're in an old familiar setting. You want to go talk to that person, but you play the chicken game. They leave with their date, and you suddenly feel all the wounds and urgency as fresh as if you had just broken up. |
