Oh with strangers to impress so near Old friends don't realize I'm here I wish two drinks were always in me I'd pretend I had the perfect ear - Old friends doesn't hang out with him anymore because he preferred being liked by a larger scale of people to just sticking and cultivating his friendships. Then he talks about the filter you get when you're drunk, you can always translate what others are saying for your benefit. Take me to the water Make me understand That I was wrong I think he's using water as a symbol of something definite, inevitable. He wants to see his bad habits without any ego-defences such as repression or denial. For me tomorrow is my first day So please don't tempt me in the wrong way He's about to start a new life but realizes it will be tough to change deeply ingraned patterns of behaviour It's almost after midnight I can see the city lights We're here He's on the right track Change your mind tonight You belong to the city now And you're closer now I know "You belong on the radio..." He's saying that he belongs with other people, he's part of humanity and should be able to talk freely I swear I'll give it back tomorrow But for now I think that I'll just borrow All the words from that song And all the chords from that other song I heard yesterday His personality is built up on other people's attributes Change your mind tonight You belong to the city now And you're closer now I know "You belong on the radio..." Same as before I will not disturb you I was just returning you The compliment Someone is nice to him but he cannot recive the love so he responds in a cold, bitter way |

| Julian Casablancas – Ludlow St. Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
While I surrendered my ego you fed yours All my fantasies died when you said yours I have dangled my pride to forget yours Will my mind be at ease when you get yours? We'll find out soon enough... Hanging out with narcissists. Either one of his parents probably was one. |

| I'm quite certain the song is about recovery form narcissistic tendencies. As in pathological narcissistic tendencies. Addictions tend to bring that in you. | |

| He was abandond as a child (by his father) and I think the "never needed anybody" plays around that theme. | |

| I don't believe it's a cover. I believe however, the the songs main theme is co-dependence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codependency). | |

| Probably about how we try to control life, but then we end up getting screwed by it. | |

It might be true that Bradford Cox doesn't write lyrics with a deeper meaning in general. But that doesn't eliminate the possibility to interpret them in different ways. I can definitley see a sort of spiritual/personal development theme in these words. |

| The Beatles – Hey Bulldog Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| I like your thinking. John obviously experienced trauma in his childhood, to the degree that he couldn't process it at the time. So he was carrying around these heavy emotions all through his Beatle career. But as you said, I think John unconsiously released small parts of these emotions when he wrote lyrics and melodies. | |
| The Strokes – Two Kinds Of Happiness Lyrics | 14 years ago |

I have a strong feeling that he's refering to the good old give and take thing. I can also see the sexual implications, but the lines "One gives life, and one makes you kill" gave me the impression that Julian is talking about ego gratisfaction vs being pure at heart. Being geniunly nice to yourself and others is energy rewarding (gives life) while ego gratisfaction is short term joy and the fundamental reason to why wars are going on (makes you kill). I found that that theory makes sense for most of the rest of the lyrics as well, i'd like to elaborate but i'm getting tired now. |

| Deerhunter – Memory Boy Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
That makes sense! I interpreted the "Try to recognize your son"-part as a kick against your father molding you to be like him and not giving you the freedom to be yourself. Then the "Is there anyone who wants to see the sun?"-part continues on that path. He's pretty much saying that people like to think that they embrace change but in reality, it's often fought against and not wanted. |

| Bradford Cox said that they wanted the melody to resemble the feeling you got after your first orgasm. Memories... | |
| Deerhunter – Agoraphobia Lyrics | 14 years ago |

Eerie song. The melody fits together really well with the lyrics. "come for me cover me comfort me" That's basically what you feel when you're uncomfortable around others. Come for me (see me), Cover me (don't see my "flaws"), Comfort me (i can't handle this shit...!!!!). |

True, that's what I'm saying. We are all part of the same source, so we are all equal. Some people try to differentiate themselvs with opinions, manners and knowings but ultimatly nothing of that matters. It's only love y'all. We are only love. Check out Eckhart Tolle or Burt Harding on YouTube if you find the meaning of this song interesting. |

| YEAH! I think Jules family is quite dysfunctional and a lot of this lyrics talks about the confusion that comes with it. | |
| The Strokes – Barely Legal Lyrics | 14 years ago |

I can relate the lyrics to growing up in a dysfunctional family. If you have, the line "I wanna steal your innocence" can have a different meaning than the obvious sexual one. If your parents are fucked up in one way or another (which Julian's seem to be, at least his greedy father) you have to grow up early and learn to adapt to "strange manners" and also learn to love them even though you really don't, in order to keep the family system working. You do this because you think that your parents will love you if you do. But the sad truth is, they really wont, it's an endless nightmare. And when you don't get the love you obviously deserve from your parents, your life "just don't make any sense." Everyone in a dysfunctional family are deprived of love and can therefore not really help each other "my sister don't give a fuck". And when you can't be affectionate with each other you recive love in terms of gifts, thus "why won't you wear your new trenchcoat". "These little problems they're not yours they're mine Come on listen to what I say I got some secrets that'll make you stay" The lyrics above sums it up pretty well. In a dysfunctional family you don't take responsibility for your own problems, you blame the other family members. The root of the dysfunction lies in secrets, or more like covered up negative emotions so the atmosphere at home is sort of spooky and you never know what to expect. Still, this makes it sort of exciting and as long as the secrets are being held you stick together. There are a few more examples, but I reckon I've made my point. Hehe. I never really dug this song, but now that I can relate to the lyrics, I'm gonna give it another go. Cheers yall!!! |
