Young Empires – The Earth Plates Are Shifting Lyrics 12 years ago
I think Young Empires try to capture the feeling of lying outside in the sun, reflecting upon life - which suits the dreamy notion of the song pretty well, in my opinion.

The first verse seems to refer to some vague shaper/creator, a god-figure who knows all the answers but chose to keep them out of men's reach but through enjoying life we find the answers ourself.

The second verse seems to allude to the rapid passing of time by human standards compared to the infinity that shapes nature around us.

I think the third verse refers to the author themself, lying in the sun, thinking that enjoying life outside is the answer ('where we go is what we've become') and that he doesn't see any need for pondering about it anymore ('the answers are laid down on a page' / 'my eyes stay shut to walk down the race').

Beirut – Elephant Gun Lyrics 13 years ago
It's funny what people tend to interpret into a song. I think it's a bit of an overkill to regard everything he sings about as a metaphor for some hidden meaning behind the song.

So here's my shot at it:

If I was young, I'd flee this town
I'd bury my dreams underground
As did I, we drink to die, we drink tonight

Far from home, elephant gun
Let's take them down one by one
We'll lay it down, it's not been found, it's not around

-> I think this is the story of an homesick, old man who dreamt of fleeing his town and go out into the world to search for change and adventures when he was young - in his case, Africa. He followed his dreams at this time just to find out that he would not be happy in his new home either, but now he realizes that he is too old to "flee this town" again and so all he keeps doing is drinking his life away. The next part - a quite important one - is incomplete, though, so I took the liberty of adding the missing parts:

Let the seasons begin - it rolls right on
Let the seasons begin, take the big king down

Let the seasons begin - it rolls right on
Let the seasons begin, take the big king down

And it rips through the silence of our camp at night
And it rips through the night

And it rips through the silence of our camp at night
And it rips through the silence, all that is left is

-> This is most definitely another hint at Africa. The next to parts of the song "let the seasons begin.... big king down" emphasize how he misses his (probably british) homeland with its different seasons because here in Africa summer just "rolls right on". He kills his time by hunting elephants, the "big king" of the steppes. Then he sings about how the gunshots rip through the silent of the night, possibly a hint at how his (or their) depressive mood just destroys the peace of his new home. He is sort of an Alien in Africa, he doesn't really belong there.

Modest Mouse – Lampshades on Fire Lyrics 14 years ago
Hmmm I'm quite sure im hearing something like this to fill the empty spaces. It might not be 100% correct but I'm quite confident someone more experienced than me could use this as a rough sketch to fill the holes. Well, here is what I got:

Spend some time to float in outer space
Find another party, make the same mistakes
Our mind's so shattered when(/as) we plan to go
waiting for the sound (?) as we find another globe (?)

and later:

...... till we're moving on
Better find another one because this one's gone
Waiting for the magic when the sound is blown
We'll push push push push push a little forward (extremely mumbled)
