Florence + the Machine – Leave My Body Lyrics 12 years ago
It reminds me of the movie Glory. I think at least the tune of the song might have been inspired by the song in the movie, if not the lyrics, too. The hum-mmm or w/e of the Flo song sounds a lot like the hum-mmm of the song they sing around the campfire near the end of the movie, and the songs share a similar tune (not the "Lord, Lord, Lord," part, but when Morgan Freeman is talking and the hm-mm is going in the background, and I don't mean the entire Flo song either)

But the lyrics remind me of the movie, too. She may have had a relationship with a person or anything else in mind while she wrote it, but I can easily relate some of the lines to the movie, especially "history keeps pulling me down". I can see the song being sang from the perspective of the Denzel Washington character. Also, the song in the movie is sang/spoken/preached/prayed (icr what exactly happened at this part) near the end, when they're about to go into what they're sure will be their last battle, so "Im gonna leave my body" ties into that, and if you're in the movie-mindset you could kind of tie all of the lines to what may be thoughts of a character during the campfire scene, just before the battle, or any time in between.

Marina and the Diamonds – The Outsider Lyrics 14 years ago
My interpretation:

1. The people Marina's observing are weird (everyone's a little weird)and she's freaked out by them, but she wants to join them because she feels like a loser and a bum observing them while they're having fun.

2. When she says, "Just because you know my name doesn't mean you know my game" I think she basically means, "Don't assume anything about me because you [think you] know this or that," which I totally get.

3. That "People are connecting" part I totally get. Sometimes people are talking about stuff I just don't get, and I don't know what to say, so I'm quiet.

4. "Is there more to lose than gain if I go on my own again?" She's wondering whether she should stick to herself or not. She she join the people she doesn't connect with to get pleasure, or protect her individuality.

Marina and the Diamonds – Seventeen Lyrics 14 years ago
Okay . . . I realize when she was writing this, she was probably thinking about her dad. When I listen to it, I think about mine, too, plus some other stuff. I'm not going into everything, but here's some big, important stuff:

Use to be a major scale
But the melody went stale
Musical cacophony let
Insy Winsy spider free

Your a rich little boy
Who's had to work for his toys
You've got all sensabilities oh
Of an upper class guy

- My dad has worked for his toys. That's why he has so many of them. He THINKS he is extremely sensible, which is why he's always lecturing (which he didn't start doing until he met his now-wife), & thinks he's got it all figured out. The only kind people he is really nice to is rich drunks who think they are awesome.

noooo, No i'm not your little slave
No i don't twist and turn that way
Only got bad things to say

- I'm not going to act like dad's wife and children are a part of my big happy family--my dad cannot MAKE me love anyone. Which he tried to, and I'm not exaggerating. & I'm not going to laugh at all of his jokes like he expects me to, either, and I'm not going to be cheerful all of the time.

Your always asking what is up, up with me
could never tell you what happened the day i turned
seventeen, the rise of a king and the fall of a queen
oh
seventeen, seven-teen

- I'm only sixteen so this parts a bit . . . idk. But what I do know is that he asks me what's wrong a lot, even when there's nothing wrong, & why I'm so quiet.

oh you were embarrassed of me
cause i used my toungue freely
bet you wish i couldn't speak
cause when i do you know i tell you why you appear weak

- True for me, especially the last part. I'd tell dad when he was doing something wrong & he would be like, "I'm always doing something wrong," but I don't CONSTANTLY do that & he'll do that to me, too, and I'll be like, "Okay, yeah, I guess I am." But no, he's gotta get all whiny. He says stuff like, "Oh woe is me, I am so stupid."

You wanna have some free life
go get your upper class wife
she's got all personalities of
a lemon that has been truly sucked dry

- When I hear the 'upper class wife' part, I think of it as saracasm. That's because he married a trashy whore.

you teach me how to behave
i felt you question the way
i was brought up as a baby
well you don't know f*** about my family

- He thinks my family is a bunch of rednecks, and that my mom is stupid.

could never tell you what happened the day i turned
seventeen, the rise of a king and the fall of a queen
oh
seventeen, seven-teen

the rise of a king, the fall of a queen

never felt like a princess
i use to kill myself in this dress
that it was just how things were meant to be

- He used to always call me 'princess' but I hated it. I hated how he treated me, too--it was almost unreal. Like it wasn't how he WANTED to treat me, but how he THOUGHT he should treat me.

oh seventeen
