If I talk in past tense at all, I'm sorry, but I analysed this song as part of my Of Mice and Men studies in English in the context of the American Depression. A situation not that disimilar to the condition of many areas of America today. In times of economic uncertainy, it often seems to the poorer people, like Mr Fallon once was, that the rich men are getting richer and doing nothing to help the poor and sometimes even the starving. "And look at the damage The fortunes came for the richer men While we're left with gallows Just waiting for us liars to come down and hang" The good people are being accused of lying (well, its Brian Fallon so I'm assuming good) whilst the rich people are getting rich with no consquences. I believe 'the fortunes' is refer to The American Dream of which Mr Fallon is kind of a believer. But it is alusive and although it is promised it doesn't come true for all and usually only for those who can afford it. |

Brian has a very complex and genuis technique of writing in which, I believe anyway, he will take something that some people might not understand (In this case, the situation for lower class Americans at the moment) and personify it into a relationship. Something everyone understands. I am a reasonably well off English girl so he did this for people like me. I don't have a clue what its like in America but I can get the fact that he would be feeling betrayed if a girl left him but what he's actually saying is that the sense of security and happiness has left him because of the depression. EXAMPLE: "And I called for my father but my father had died." I'm pretty sure that Brian's father is still alive although it was before he would have written this that he said so, he just doesn't connect him for fear of straining the relationship with his mother. A father figure represents safety and the warm feeling inside your heart, (anyone reading this remember falling asleep in the back of their parents cars?) He's saying that that feeling has been lost. |

| I've never really thought in that much detail about this song in particular, I would say the second meaning for the chorus is more likely since Brian doesn't drink. He says that he is so grateful for the mind God gave him that he would never want to be out of it. | |

When I saw him sing this live, Hollie (his wife) was sat at the side of the stage and as he sang "I only love Virginia's heart he looked to her and she smiled.
