I think people are way too quick to point out metaphors for drugs in pretty much all songs but I do agree that the "Getaway Car" is a metaphor for using drugs or something destructive like that. In the chorus "Settle down" or he'll hit the highway in his Getaway Car, i.e. use drugs or alcohol or something like this to cope. "Settle up" and I'll help you find/use something destructive with me i.e. use drugs or alcohol w/ me. |

If this is really autobiographical of Joy/JP, that is absolutely insane. It really explains the oddness of the entire situation, of them being mysteriously on hiatus both before and after a new album drops. IF it's truly meant to be autobiographical (disclaimer: speculation) then it's pretty clear they had an affair and I wonder if the line about wishing the relationship was "just a longing gone without a trace" means they had a baby together (the trace being left behind being a baby). I know that's probably crass to speculate about and it could be 100% incorrect but I know Joy just had a baby, so just throwing that out there.. just something I pondered as I read the lyrics. Of course, it could be just about others finding out about an affair as well. One thing's for sure, it's insane how the tone and content of the album shifted from Barton Hollow to self-titled. Considering they are oddly on hiatus, it's clear SOMETHING pretty serious happened, probably romantic, and definitely more serious than your typical band in-fighting. |

| Alice in Chains – Nothin' Song Lyrics | 13 years ago |

Here's *EXACTLY* what this song is about: "REVOLVER: it sounds like some of the guys felt your indulgences were getting in the way of the band. STALEY: I got things done, didn’t I? I’d show up five hours late to band practice with no lyrics, and they’d yell at me and I’d leave. But I’d come back and do it all late at night. In the end, all the songs got finished." Basically, Layne just wrote random lyrics to a song done, period. When I hear this song I always think of the scenario Layne described above (showing up to practice, probably strung out, with no lyrics....getting into a fight with the band members and storming off.....coming back and writing these nonsensical and arbitrary lyrics late at night). I'd LOVE to see Jerry's reaction to hearing these lyrics for the first time...lol. |

| Temple of the Dog – Say Hello 2 Heaven Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| I thought you were nuts when I read this, but now that I pay attention I can actually see where you're coming from. I am guessing it's Vedder and Cornell, because why would they hide it if Layne/Jerry contributed? It sounds so much like them that it is eery though. I've never noticed this and I've probably listened to this song hundreds of times. | |

Great post. I also think it's about his brother. -used the terms "mama" and "daddy" 2x each like you would use it among your siblings -actually used the term "brother" -"We both know who you are" implies an intimate relationship, i.e. his brother -"Uncle Joe's farm", again, using it like they share Joe as an uncle similar to how they share "mama"/"daddy" -references very early childhood activities that would be most common among siblings |

| Audioslave – Like a Stone Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| This song always reminded me of Townes Van Zandt's "Waiting Around to Die". It might be a little more hopeful though. | |
| Soundgarden – Black Hole Sun Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| I can agree it's an apocalyptic end-of-the-world song like 4th of July and Aenema(TOOL). But what exactly is BLACK HOLE SUN symbolically. Knowing that it's potentially an apocalyptic song, I always wondered if black hole sun was a massive meteor heading toward earth and giving the illusion of a solar eclipse (the meteor visually inside the sun). | |

Always thought this song was based on the band members knocking on the door to Layne's apartment, trying to help him. I've heard/read quotes from Cantrell or Kinney on many occasions about how they'd beat down Layne's door trying to get through to him and he would never answer. He just shut himself in his apartment, did drugs, and ignored help from his friends. 1st couple paragraphs are from Layne's point of view ("your peace of mind") - Layne hiding in his apartment hearing footsteps and seeing shadows 2nd couple paragraphs are from Cantrell/Kinney and others trying to help him ("Keep us separate, sullen, dumb") - biting their tongues and holding their breaths to hear if Layne is home.....they feel separate/stupid/sad DuVall's "LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY" which sounds like Layne, intentional or unintentional, makes it even eerier. |

| Heroin isn't a faceless poison. It's about something intangible. | |
| Soundgarden – Never the Machine Forever Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| No clue what Kim actually meant but I like to interpret it as fighting some unbeatable machine......and WINNING. The machine can be symbolic of whatever you want it to be, and whatever you chose the machine to be YOU CONQUERED. | |

| Pretty self-explanatory - this song is sooooo awesome. | |
| Soundgarden – Boot Camp Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| The best thing about this song to go along with the lyrics is how Cornell interprets it. The "conformity" verses he sings in a very repressed and controlled manner (especially for him!). Then when he starts thing about "far away" he starts to unleash a little bit. The variance makes the song a masterpiece, IMO. | |
