Here's the situation this song is written into in my opinion. Have you completely committed your life to Christ, then find some days you still feel empty and alone? This is where I think Rich was when he wrote hard to get. What he gives here reminds me of a lot of what C.S. Lewis says as well about why that is. God is home, we are in the far country. Each verse here gives a different slant on the situation we're in here and why God feels far away. It's because we're far away. You live in heaven, hear the prayers of those of us who live on earth You live eternity, hear the prayers of those of us who live in time You live in radiance, hear the prayers of those of us who live in skin The answer to the question "why do we feel so far from God?" is because our sin has broken us down and put us in a different place. We are weak. Lewis' answer as to why God doesn't speak with us face to face is that he can't 'Til We Have Faces. So God is hard to get, but not impossible. |

I've been playing this one a lot lately learning the piano, so been thinking about it. This has been called a morose song about dying, as Rich explains on one interview, but to me you have to skip over the most powerful line in the song to think that. When my body lies in the ruins Of the lies that nearly ruined me Will you pick up the pieces that were pure and true and breathe your life into them, set them free Probably the most interesting lyric in the song, depending on what he means by it is ... we're gonna die eventually and it's no more or less our fault, than it is our destiny The wages of sin is death, so I have bought my own death, but i was also born with sin, so in a sense someone else bought my death as well. Got some crazy life wisdom from Rich on we have to learn to walk beneath those mercies by which we're drawn and now we wrestle in the dark with these angels that we can't see we will move on although the scars oh lord, move inside of me. Amazing song, gifted writer. |
