if you like this song you should hear michael crenshaw's starless summer night, which should have been writ as "star filled summer night" imho. it's just a great song about being young under the stars, and sets a mood not unlike this song, all be it a bit lighter. wow, i read all 54 comments and i still feel they're off the mark somehow, even though the drug thing is close, and coke does shimmer. i'm going to fire off some more or less unassociated impressions, and maybe someone can take this a step further. first off the place is either one of those senic overlooks where like on the tv show happy days where they hold submarine races, or maybe a place of mind, or state of mind. as the night wears on, the makeout point empties out; fades with the light of dawn. the stars in the milky way are facinating, but cold, hence; loveless facination. Sometimes when this place gets kind of empty Sound of their breath fades with the light I think about the loveless fascination Under the Milky Way tonight the curtain is the curtain of stars; or maybe the curtain of dawn that obscures the stars, or is it death? i always heard the lyrics second line in the stanza to say "lower the curtain down on life". but there are no lyrics in the cd package. i got no time for consultations - could be he's just alone, or maybe has no time for the shrink? i like the alone idea at this makeout point, or just anywhere under the stars. maybe he's just getting ready to get high? maybe since he is alone this night he has no time for one on one. Lower the curtain down on Memphis Lower the curtain down all right I got no time for private consultation Under the Milky Way tonight our hero is certainly alone tonight, maybe thinking about his lady, wondering what she was looking for in life. he has been there before, and so knows what she will find. maybe its saying they are both looking at the stars instead of each other, and they only find that loveless facination. maybe its wondering why they are doing those drugs, with the high being that what you would find. these lines are key to the song as they are repeated over and over, and are way important, so i'd say if you can figure their meaning you will understand the actual message. maybe the message is just what it makes you feel when you hear it? [Chorus] Wish I knew what you were looking for Might have known what you would find Wish I knew what you were looking for Might have known what you would find peculiar, shimmering and white; the field of stars? the sparkling coke? a ghost? well whatever it is it leads you to that state of mind, or to that scenic overlook, no matter where it was you started out for. if it's a ghost that would be really weird! but that's all folks, that's where the song ends. it captures a complete feeling and conjures the mood. after writing this i feel i'm leaning towards the drug idea, so maybe you all weren't all that off the track after all. And it's something quite peculiar Something shimmering and white Leads you here despite your destination Under the Milky Way tonight and might i add, this is an amazing song, donnie d is a cool movie, and i was sorry to hear they didn't include this, the best song, in their director's cut; could it have been a low budget? [Chorus] Under the Milky way tonight Under the Milky Way tonight |

| on the new digital remaster you can clearly hear the line stated in the lyrics here and sung that way in the standard studio version as "as the final curtain falls before my eyes" is actually sung in the bonus track of the 2007 remaster "as the final curtain LIFTS before my eyes, As far as my eyes can see...." thats like looking into infinity and so much cooler i think; a beginning and not an end. the song can then repeat itself, like reincarnation, because the last line is the first line. this alternate cut rocks! | |
