Just love the "it's all bark...and no tree" line. Everyone hearing this for the first time will already have expected the line to be "it's all bark... and no bite" but BNL manage to take it somewhere completely different and still say something profound in the process. |

| I love the juxtaposition in this track. It is a beautiful song about the glory of love and how it can power everything. Rather than sing about birds and rainfall and other such cliches they take the elements one would usually associate with urban decay (burning tires, filthy streams, power stations) to show how one can see beauty in almost anything whilst in love. The theme of light/power is woven into the song from the light bulb, to the fires, to the wires in the wall. And it's simple charming. | |

I too think there are references to the sexual part of a relationship becoming stale. To me "..before the fall of Rome" and "....before the west was won" are references to the time before virginity is lost (whose, it's not clear) - a time when everything is new an exciting. And, as many others have pointed out, the reference to "fingers here" and "same three chords" is a not-so-subtle metaphore for a lack of sexual invention. The last part shows that outside love/sex, it's almost impossible for things to be new and novel. The 30th Century/Price is Right line conjures the idea that in centuries time, we'll still be regurgitating the same old entertainment ideas. That bit is true already! |
