Hmmmm...I think all of the things he lists, while good human behaviors (obeying stop signs, curing diseases, remembering to put the return address on mail) are not behaviors that will help the planet. In fact, while definitely good in some ways, all of these behaviors are potentially BAD for the environment-obeying stop signs means the person is driving a vehicle (carbon emission among other things), sending letters uses paper so it's destroying trees, curing diseases could mean animal testing research, not to mention, I'm sure a lot of the diseases being studied would not even exist if humans kept the planet cleaner and used only what they needed from the land to survive, instead of taking everything they can from it. I think the whole verse is a stab at society because even when trying to do good things, paying attention to the environment is constantly overlooked and ignored. And the first verse about JFK, I believe was just another stab at society for making assassins and other murderers famous by paying so much attention to things like that, and wnating to learn more, more, more about this assassin(trying to solve the "mystery" mentioned in the song.) A disturbed and confused man shot JFK, most likely to gain life long notoriety. If people weren't so obsessed with following these sad stories of murder, with watching the world destroy itself, and with giving fame to murderers because of their fascination with it, there wouldn't be people killing others to gain fame, because killing someone important wouldn't bring you fame. But that's just my interpretation...Who knows! |

These two ideas are the two I've always thought this song was about, and depending on my mood, I would be convinced it was about one, and then my mood would change and I would be sure it was about the other. I thought, if it was guy visiting his ex-girlfriend who's moved to a new city and moved on without him, "the only keeping him dry" would be that he really wants to cry, but can't because he is out with this girl's new friends and doesn't want to make a scene. In the re-hab aspect, dry can be a term for not drinking, like sober, and it was maybe a problem they shared so the only thing keeping him dry (sober) is being in the rehab building to visit her. Definitely sounds like a co-dependent relationship that she had the courage to leave to help herself get sober. I love how the writer really personifies the city, as though it's another character in the song, and the absence of these two recovering drinkers leaves the city streets "lonely" and "sleeping alone". This song is so good but so sad! I've loved it since I first heard it several years ago! I first heard it through a boyfriend I had quite a few years ago. It was a really rocky relationship and there were always nights where I'd wish he was sleeping next to me, but we'd had a fight or something so he'd go home and I'd sleep alone. My initals are DC, so it always made me emotional to hear this song, and especially the line "DC sleeps alone tonight." |
