Incubus – Isadore Lyrics 14 years ago
I actually just read this after I posted mine and I think this makes more sense than what I said, haha. I somehow never considered the narrator to be part of it even though technically they are brought into it when he says "I want/my worst fears/etc."

Incubus – Isadore Lyrics 14 years ago
Okay so... for the longest time I figured Isadore is a woman's name and that Erica and Isadore are lovers (actually, that last bit is just a fact. He SAYS that flat-out. So if you're saying oh it's Erica and her baby - no, there is no baby. I'll explain) but I just looked up the name and Isadore is a masculine name. W/e, not super important.

"Erica and her Isadore climbed aboard a balloon" they're in the balloon, together. These two people are the ONLY people in the ballon. So when he says "our lovers turned dissolute," THAT MEANS SEX. Look it up in a dictionary if you don't believe me. There are only two people in this song and there is nothing about being pregnant that is explicitly said, so those of you saying this just have pretty wild imaginations.

Basically I've been mulling this song over and over for the longest time and the meaning that I have reached for it is this: Erica and Isadore were having problems ("you can't just leave/I've given everything") but they are working to sort it out ("I want more than this kite will soar/I've set our sights on the moon"). The song goes back and forth in the timeline. After they reach their "unbridled height" aka they finally solve their issue, they realize that they can't be together for other reasons ("there's just one parachute"). Isadore lets Erica "take" the parachute and Erica professes her undying love/appreciation (whichever) for the fact that her lover let her go/let her have the parachute and escape whatever it was driving them apart ("I won't rest until the world knows the name Isadore"). I believe it was a selfless act on Isadore's part because the next part of the song is clearly from his perspective ("goodbye Erica now I see/that my worst fears were in tune" - his worst fears being that it couldn't be fixed).

Obviously the parachute, balloon, moon, etc. are all metaphors. Brandon Boyd is not in the balloon with these people, I seriously hope that whoever said that was just trolling.

I'm open to other interpretations of why they were fighting or why/who took the parachute (I guess I can see the 'Isadore wants fame' perspective, but this makes more sense to me). But no matter which way I look at this, it's only about two people, who are definitely lovers, and that is just looking at the actual definitions of the words that they chose when they wrote this song. Boyd is a pretty intelligent human being and uses very specific words in his lyrics, I'm 100% certain he wouldn't choose words like "dissolute" without knowing what they meant.
