This song does NOT condemn people who commit suicide. Here's my interpretation: "No more pain, no more love, for you have chosen suicide as the way out... help them, help them, help them, help them, help them, help them!" "Help them" is the salient phrase in this case. He's praying for those people, who decided to end their live. It shows us that there is still hope for them to be saved. However, the most controversial lines are: "I'm sorry for whoever I hurt, it's not easy to look back on my life, and know I did not know Christ For now I live in a real hell I wish I had another chance... then I would live my life with love" Without a deeper interpretation, you may say that person had been condemned for commiting suicide and now lives "in a real hell" and has no chance for redemption. But this belief is mistaken. "I wish I had another chance... then I would live my life with love" - these are the crucial words that show us that he feels repentance and asks for forgiveness. Still you may say it is too late, cause you can't repent after death, but I think that after dying, he was taken to hell only to make him realize that suicide was not the proper way to solve his problems. He had thought that his life was hell ("On the outside I looked fine, you couldn't tell but on the inside was eternal hell") and that's why he was given the chance to compare it with "the real hell". Then, after saying "I wish I had another chance... then I would live my life with love", his wish could have come true and he could have become "another chance" (another chance to repent and be left in purgatory for as long as he would have to live on Earth and eventually enter Heaven). |
