I think the whole song is about a divorce; It was Cinco de Mayo Pillow case on his head No more breathing time An ambulance sped Sped 'round ever corner Calling out his name They split on the 5th of May (Cinco De Mayo) The father felt suffocated in the relationship The pillow case is metaphoric of the dreams he sacrificed. An ambulance represents urgency and crisis. Possibly the move calling his name and begging him to stay. Shot a rabbit from the back seat window Sat and watched the summer corn grow Ate ice cream in a desert dream And got lost in father's singing Too hot inside Too hot outside Lazy days when I said let's go for a ride We'd sail on Spirit Lake Me, my pappy, and his serenade This is all reminiscent of things things done with the father. Basically what would be missed. Tim and Tina were my parents' names They got engaged They were inflamed Seduced by the light of butterflies How they shimmer, how they glimmer Those butterflies This is fairly straight forward; telling the story of the parents; they fell for lust and the light of their flame. But, that turned into a lie. We seven kids We almost died Nearly put to death By lightening strikes Instead there was hot, pink Flashes in the sky We climbed the rocks, in snow and rain In search of magic powers To heal our mother's pain The kids felt responsible which is common with divorce. Lightening strikes represent possible violence and turmoil. Hot pink flashes in the sky can be symbolic of the sun rise, a new beginning. They climbed a metaphoric mountain trying to heal the pain their mother was going through. Well that's my take on things :) |

Personally I feel that this song is about death; not so much suicide but begging someone who's terminally ill to keep fighting. if this world is wearing thin and you're thinking of escape i'll go anywhere with you If you're going to give up i'll follow you into the afterlife; together in death. i'll do anything it takes [just wrap me up in chains] take me with you; even if it's unwillingly. but if you try to go alone don't think i'll understand Explaining how hysterical she'll get in the grieving process; not understanding how to live with out him. In the silence of your room in the darkness of your schemes [ ... dreams] there among the souvenirs [you must only think of me] and the useless memories [there can be no in between] Use me as your guiding light back to this life. when your pride is on the floor i'll make you beg for more When you're at your limits, I'm going to push you harder. you'd better hope and pray that you'll be safe [ that you make it safe] in your own world [back to your own world] you'd better hope and pray that you're gonna awake [that you wake one day] back in your own world [in your own world] [cause when you sleep at night they don't hear your cries] [in your own world] [only time will tell if you can break the spell] [back in your own world] This is my favourite part of the video and song! I think this piece is directed at both the man and the grieving woman; To him: pray that you'll wake up and only time will tell if he actually will. To Her: Pray that you'll be able to carry on afterwards and get over this possible loss. No one will hear your crying when you're alone and only time will tell if you'll be able to carry on. The video overall explains a lot; in some cultures the Moon is the Mother of all life on Earth. She is associated with the Spiral of Life - birth, death, and rebirth. She grants our wishes. She guides our dreams. This coupled with the shooting star is symbolic of her wishes. No doubt that death enters and it's a fight between life & death; her all consuming love triumphing. This is what I got from the song. This will always be one of my favourite songs :D |
